Announcements:
Tennessee RTI2 Initiative: The department shared guidance and information about the Response to Instruction and Intervention Initiative during last week's Special Education and RTI Joint Summit. Three principles guide our state's initiative: - Leadership at the state, district and building level is essential for ensuring the success of ALL students.
- A culture of collaboration that is focused on student achievement, for both struggling and advancing students, should include educators, families and communities.
- Response to Instruction and Intervention is a process focused on prevention and early intervention that uses assessment data for instruction, intervention and transitions between tiers.
You may review the Response to Instruction and Intervention Initiative manual here. Also available at www.tncore.org are the following grade-level specific Response to Instruction and Intervention guidelines, which provide a summer and overarching view of instruction and intervention:
For questions, about the guidelines, please contact the special education and curriculum and instruction team at rti.questions@tn.gov.
4th Grade TCAP Math Practice Test:
Please note that , item number 55, located on page 83 of the 4th grade math practice test set two, was written to assess one of the State Performance Indicators that the department dropped from this year's TCAP assessment.
Upon learning that this item was inadvertently included in the practice test, a thorough review of all 3-8 math practice tests and item samplers occurred to make certain that none of them contains an item written to assess a dropped State Performance Indicator. The department is also conducting an additional review of all 3-8 math TCAP assessments to ensure that none contains an item written to assess a dropped State Performance indicator.
The estimated performance level cut scores we provided are not impacted by the omission of one item.

Resources:
New Math Tasks: The department is releasing eight new instructional mathematics tasks. These tasks are in addition to the tasks posted in February and are available on the TNCore site to support your work in engaging students in high level tasks. Students should have the opportunity to work independently, discuss ideas with a partner or small group and participate in whole class discussion consistent with the structures and routines of a lesson which were shared in our 2012 summer training. Principals and teachers can find the new math tasks at www.tncore.org.
Resources for Common Core State Standards in Mathematics: Below is a list of resources that can be found at www.tncore.org.
- Guidance on using instructional tasks
- A list of all standards included in the 2013-14 TNCore Focus Clusters for each grade/course
- Tools for understanding and implementing CCSS for mathematics
- A video with Common Core Standards co-author, Phil Daro, on "sense-making"
