Seeking Reading and RTI Leadership Team Applicants :

The department is seeking reading and response to intervention (RTI) coordinators, teachers, principals, and supervisors from across the state to serve on a Reading and RTI Leadership Team. The purposes of this group will be assisting in preparing resources for teachers, conducting a review of reading and RTI materials, advising on reading training content and RTI strategies, and advising the department on other items supporting good reading and RTI instruction. Monthly meetings will be held January through April, with additional meetings occurring on an as-needed basis through December. The term of service will be one full calendar year and will involve aapproximately 10-15 hours of work each month outside of meetings.  Interested reading and RTI educators must submit a letter of intent as well as a résumé listing two references to Tammy.L.Shelton@tn.gov  by Jan. 15, 2013. Interviews will be conducted in mid-January. Selected applicants will receive a competitive stipend and will be reimbursed for Reading and RTI Leadership Team travel-related expenses.

Questions to Ask Vendors of Products and Professional Development:

As we transition to Common Core State Standards, schools and districts have asked if the Tennessee Department of Education is going to recommend a list of recommended instructional materials or professional-development providers. As one way to assist districts, we wanted to offer a recommended list of questions to help districts test alignment.

The Role of Fiction in the High School English Classroom:

In recent weeks, there has been some debate about the balance of literary and informational texts in the Common Core, especially in high school. This  article, written by the two lead authors of the English Language Arts Standards, refutes several myths and misperceptions and reaffirms the crucial role literature will continue to play under the Common Core.

Implementing the Common Core Mathematical Practices: The PARCC Model Content Frameworks state "The Standards for Mathematical Practice should be embedded in classroom instruction, discussions, and activities" (p. 8). This article addresses the need for anyone involved in mathematics education to have a firm understanding of Mathematical Practices. Ideas for managing, designing professional development, and selecting tasks that reflect the Practices are included.
