HIGH SCHOOL

We have almost reached the midpoint of the quarter. At this point in the year, it is important for the students to start developing their academic goals for their classes. Through the personal learning plan (PLP), students will be able to identify the courses where they want to work on improvement, as well as on courses where they seek enrichment. Because the students create the PLP with support from the teachers, students are better able to demonstrate ownership of their learning. Next week, we will begin the process of designing the learning plans, and students will work directly with their teachers to develop a plan of action. Students will then email the PLPs to the parents so that they will be involved in helping the students to achieve their goals. From that time, students will constantly work on their goals and provide updates about their progress to their parents and to their teachers.

We are excited about this process and the way that the student-owned PLPs will help develop even more of a growth mindset in our students as they reach their goals and then set new ones. We are trying to ensure that our students are looking ahead and actively seeking the changes that they want to see in their academic lives. Be on the lookout for PLPs!

Another opportunity to connect with teachers is on the horizon as well. Friday, September 19 is the conference day for parents and teachers to discuss student needs. Please contact your child's teacher(s) directly to set up a conference.

LOWER SCHOOL
Dear Families,

We're excited to be starting our second year with Cloud9World, a comprehensive character-building program in the Lower School. By celebrating select character traits each month, our students receive daily instruction and reinforcement of virtues and qualities that are critical in the overall development of our students. This popular program incorporates participation from our families so ask your child about this month's trait, 'cooperation!' The monthly trait will be showcased on the lunchroom bulletin board. Each grade level will take a trait to explore and share their thoughts with the rest of the school.

Lower School students will be cheering on their Pigskin Pal at Friday's Pep Rally! Each classroom is assigned a varsity football player to cheer on and support throughout the football season. We are looking forward to cheering on the Varsity Football Team this Friday at the first home game of the year! The game starts at 4:30 p.m. The WPVA will host the Welcome Back BBQ, which is free to all WPS families. Please plan on joining in the fun.

Have a great weekend!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dear Middle School Families,

They say that life isn't a competition, but doesn't everyone love to WIN? Well, we've given new meaning to that word, asking our students to often reflect and think WIN: What I Need to be successful. It's an acronym to be remembered each night while prepping for the next day, or while exiting the car to start the day, or readying for sports practice. Whatever we're doing, we all have it in us to WIN!

We each also have it in us to be leaders, and to make a difference. Recently, our Eighth graders learned this important life lesson, which we refer to as "leading with lollipops." Please take a few moments to view this inspirational clip.

Put yourselves "out there" and make a difference. It's wonderful to see so many of our students involved in Fall Athletics, celebrating school spirit and becoming totally engaged on campus. Your commitment and sportsmanship is admirable and absolutely commended!

Students might also get involved with our many clubs. Sixth graders are encouraged to get involved with our SGA! Campaigns begin September 23. Click for details

The WPS Film and Broadcast students are already off to a great start! The advanced film students have been in pre-production for the past week, and are starting production on their short film, "1437." The Broadcast students have also been very busy filming and reporting the most up to date WPS news, stories, and activities around campus. Intro to Film is now in post-production of their group stop motion projects, and they are looking great! Last, but certainly not least, IB Film is on their way to becoming film theory masters! Currently we are covering German expressionism and cinematography, all which will be influential to their filmmaking experience. Things are looking great so far in the film and broadcast world!
