A Letter from Dr. Marcy
Dear WPS Parents,
To help our parents become current and well-informed regarding their child's behavior and safety in the virtual world, WPS is offering a parent information program at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014 on the topic: "Monitoring Your Child's Cyber and Party Worlds." Richard B. Schwamm, Esq., WPS parent, and child injury lawyer and advocate, and Debra Santostefano, WPS Director of Guidance and College Counseling, will present this program, which is particularly geared for Upper School parents. Click for the full letter from Dr. Marcy.
2014 Gala
The 2014 WPVA "Vintage Hollywood" Gala is just a couple of days away! We have worked hard to put together an amazing silent auction this year, and it is one of our best ever! Click to see the program with details on the event, the auction, and how to pre-register. Please take a look at the program - you will not want to miss your chance at all of the amazing items up for bid! This year we are proud to partner with Qtego Auction Technology, and the entire bidding process will be done via smartphone. Charge up your phones (and bring an extra charger just in case)! See you all at the Gala on Saturday night!

HIGH SCHOOL
I am always excited about this time of year because I start to look forward to what great things can happen during the next school year! This week your children have had the opportunity to begin preparing for next school year with their course selections. They have been receiving information about the different programs and courses that we offer, and I hope that they have been sharing this information with you. Course descriptions have been posted to Skyward, so if you need clarification about a certain course, that is at your disposal. Talking to your children's current teachers will also help you with their course selections. Please reach out to them at any time. If you have any questions about which courses students should take next year, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Have a great weekend, and see you at the Gala!

LOWER SCHOOL
Fifth Graders Create a Zoo
In fifth grade math classes, students have been working for the past month on creating their own zoo. Students had to take a parcel of land given to them, and plan to display 10-15 different animals in four very different habitats. The plan had to include the area needed for each animal species, as well as the perimeter of the enclosures. Fifth graders Emma Conroy and Shaye Longwell, were two of the first students to complete their plan and map out their zoos, which included planned bathrooms, gift shops, restaurants, and theaters.
It is hard to believe that we are already saying good-bye to the month of February. We will end this month with our annual celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday during our Read Across America assembly tomorrow morning, after our visit with our Laker Learning Buddies. The National Education Association is building a nation of readers through its signature program, NEA's Read Across America. Now in its 17th year, this year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources. We are excited to have our Lower School students participate in the event planned by our own Lower School Student Government.

The following Kindergarten Fine Arts students were selected to participate in the Meritas International Art Awards.

4th Grade Spanish Students Get Surreal
In Spanish class, fourth graders are in the final stages of their surreal collages. The students have studied the works of Salvador Dali for two weeks, and are completing their own surreal collages. They have learned about dislocation, juxtaposition, metamorphosis, and symbolism. The conversations and high-level thinking involved in this study were amazing! What a fantastic project!
Congratulations to our first and second grade students who performed "A Book is a Magic Carpet" on Tuesday. The students' hard work and dedication was evident as they put on a wonderful performance for their parents this week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." We'll do just that on Monday, March 3, as we participate in Read Across America with a Seussian Celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Check out some trivia about the good doctor here. And please, celebrate the day with a nod to Dr. Seuss and some quality reading time!
Then, it's time to flash those smiles! Next Wednesday, all students will have candid photos taken during class, offered by Tom Marshall Photography. Parents, you will receive the prints later in the month to review and purchase, if desired.
Also on Wednesday, our 7th grade Foundations of Latin, and 8th grade Latin I students, sit for the National Latin Exam. What a great opportunity to show what you know, represent WPS, and shine! Possunt quia posse videntur (power of positive thinking)!
