HIGH SCHOOL

There is a lot of activity in the High School throughout this month! From testing, to field trips and more, we are excited about what this month has to bring for our students!

There is also much to be proud of as our students continue to excel in our Debate competitions, and our students who participated in the Regional Latin Forum. Overall, our students are demonstrating in exemplary fashion what it means to be a Laker!

Latin Forum

On Saturday, February 1, Windermere Preparatory School Middle and High School Latin Club students attended Regional Latin Forum at Winter Springs High School. Twelve local schools were present to compete in academic and creative competitions and celebrate the language, customs, and history of ancient Greece and Rome. Click for details.

Debate Team

Congratulations to the WPS Debate Team who competed at Trinity Prep this past Saturday in the Florida Forensics League Timacuan Region Qualifying Tournament! Vernon L., Arturo A., Grant E., Michael W., and Nabeel A. represented our school well, winning five competitions throughout the day in the Public Forum policy debates.

WPS Sophomore Chosen to Attend HOBY Conference

Congratulations to Nick LaFalce who has been chosen to be this year's attendee at the prestigious Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) conference. Each year, WPS sends one sophomore to this conference. The student is chosen based on their interest, and an essay he/she submits that speaks to his/her personal experience and leadership ideals.

Nick will attend several leadership sessions at a designated college in Florida, and will meet high profile speakers who will focus on the social change model of leadership from three perspectives: Personal Leaders, Group Leadership, and Leadership for Society. We are very proud to be sending Nick to this Leadership Conference.

LOWER SCHOOL

February has arrived, and so have hearts and expressions of caring! While each day of the year we welcome our students with open arms, we truly appreciate this month of love to reflect on the joy our students fill us with always!

Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart

On Monday, we kicked off our Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart event. Packets were sent home with your child this week. We are looking forward to the culminating event on February 21. Please sign up your child to join our American Heart Association School Team online! Visit www.heart.org/jump (Lower School) or www.heart.org/hoops (Middle School) and click on "New Students Sign Up Here" to get started on your online campaign.

Health Tip

During this cold and flu season, it is important to not only protect yourself and your children from germs, but to also  protect others if someone in your family is ill. Florida Department of Health recommends adhering to these three simple tips to "Protect Don't Infect."

- Wash your hands

- Cover your cough and sneeze

- Stay home when you are sick

100+ Days of School

We celebrated a landmark day last week with our 100th day of school. PK4 celebrated by getting a break from uniforms and wearing their pajamas to school. First Grade held their annual Hat Parade; other grade levels explored the number 100 in all sorts of fun ways, and Kindergarten students completed their 100th day projects. One student used 100 Legos to recreate his school day in his classroom, the playground, the bridge, and even Dr. Marcy waving in traffic!

Lakerettes

Lower School girls participated in the Lakerette Dance clinic a couple of weeks ago and performed their routine last Friday night at the basketball game. The 28 Lower School girls were awesome! The future of dance at WPS is looking bright!

Reminders

Please remember to turn in your student contracts for 2014-2015 by tomorrow, February 7. We are anticipating full classes at many grade levels, and we want to make sure all of our current school families return next year!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

WOW. It is very exciting to see our Middle School nearly full! Each grade level will be at capacity next year, making us strong in spirit and in number! Thank you for entrusting us with your children - we are proud to be a part of your educational career.

Yesterday marked the approximate midpoint of Quarter 3, so please look for progress reports posted in Skyward. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the course teacher. Students are also always encouraged to track their progress regularly, as they check Skyward in homeroom each week.

Roller Coaster Projects

The 4 C's of 21st Century - creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication - are evident in all we do on the Middle School campus. One such example is the 8th graders' recent roller coaster project. Students are totally immersed in this hands-on experience, collaborating with their fellow coaster engineers as they design a product to showcase the science of physics, all themed to an American History era. The 8th graders have been hard at work, critically thinking as they put scientific theory into practice during the creation and construction of their coasters.  Some students even enjoyed a Saturday workshop at WPS, creating their coasters to specification. Click for photos.

We're looking forward to the final products at "Dancing through the Decades," this year's 8th grade theme park. Families are invited to join us for the displays on Wednesday, February 12.

Congrats to Lakerette Dancers: Caitlin Roach, Darby Foster, Stephanie Haidukewych, Amy Ding, Helen Huang, Katy Pena, Caitlyn Griffin and Danielle Miceli.

Voices of Lee

Last week, we were so fortunate to have on campus "Voices of Lee" from Lee University.  They are a contemporary a cappella singing group featured as the 3rd place winner on Season 1 of the hit television show, The Sing-Off. They did vocal workshops with select students in grades 4-12 throughout the day, and then treated our entire campus to a concert that afternoon. Our students not only received expert vocal training, but they also learned one of the group's top hits and the opportunity to perform with them on stage during the afternoon concert. Click here to see this spectacular performance with both "Voices of Lee" and our WPS students.

Lower School Arts

First grade students are preparing for their performance of "A Book is a Magic Carpet" in the Gym on February 25 at 9:00 a.m. Above, Mrs. Matthews' class is rehearsing "Frog and Toad."
