WPS Introduces Board of Trustees

As a further testament to the Coming of Age of Windermere Preparatory School, we are pleased to announce the formation of the WPS Board of Trustees. The eighteen members are all parents, collectively and widely representative of the diversity of our school community.

As a whole, Board members have children in all three divisions of the school. In addition to their primary interest in the caliber of the academic program, there are shared interests among Board members regarding the further maturation of the Fine and Performing Arts and Interscholastic Athletics programs. In addition to parent members of the Board, there are three ex-officio members of the Board - a senior faculty representative, a representative for the international boarding students and their parents, and the President of the WPVA, each of whom is also the parent of a WPS student(s). letter from Dr. Marcy.

HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome back! It's been a great summer and I hope that you are all (students and parents) ready for what's to come in this school year!

This first week of school will spark the Laker Spirit and our unity-building Friday activities are geared toward helping the students embrace the idea of Unitas! Please remember to have your child submit permission forms if he or she is in Grades 10 - 12. Click for the packet of permission slip forms.

With growth and change come new faces to the campus. I would like to take this time to introduce some of the new teachers that you will see on the high school campus this year:

Jesse Bernhardt - Physical Fitness, Advanced Weights, and Lacrosse Coach

Kelly Borrowman - Biology, Biology Hon, AP Environmental Science

Marline Cortes - Spanish II, Spanish III Hon

Noah DeBonis - IB Film, Film Production, Broadcast

Brenda Fields - Latin, Ancient World History, Ancient World History Hon

Kyle Gilbert - Physical Fitness, Advanced Weights, and Varsity Sports Strength Coach

Amanda Youngblood - English II Hon, English III/III Hon, English IV/IV Hon

I am excited about these additions and I know that you will be too, so please extend a warm welcome if you happen to see them on campus, and of course, please also welcome back our wonderful returning teachers!

As the new year gets underway, many events will arise that you will need to please keep in mind. Some of the more immediate dates are listed below:

August 16 - Unity-Building Friday

August 28-30 - New Student ERB Testing (Grade 9 only for High School)
September 4 - Picture Day

For this week, please encourage your student to submit their Honor Code, Locker Forms, and Student Profiles to their first period teachers. The Honor Code is located in the Upper School Handbook.

I wish you all a wonderful school year!

LOWER SCHOOL

Dear Families,

It was a pleasure to see all of our new and returning families on campus this week. We are very excited for a great school year! The energy in classrooms is palpable, and we are so happy the year is officially under way. We are looking forward to working collaboratively with you to make certain each of our students reach their full potential. Your primary point of contact will be your child's homeroom teacher. Please don't hesitate to call or email them with questions. Should you have questions outside the realm of the classroom, please use this parent " go to" sheet for assistance.

Please remember to log into Skyward and update your student(s) profile. This information is critical in the event of an emergency during the school day. If you need assistance with logging into Skyward, email Leslie Schwartz and she will be happy to help you.

We will do our very best to make certain that students arrive and depart campus on time and in an efficient manner. Please understand that our first priority for arrival and dismissal is your child's safety. Here are a few things you can do to help us in the process:

- Students should be seated in the back seat and exit the car on
   the driver's side only.

- Backpacks and lunch boxes should not be stored in the trunk.
This is dangerous for students and teachers who must
retrieve items from the back of the vehicle.

- Parents are asked to pull up to the furthest point of the drop off
area and remain in the vehicle. (Pre-K parents are the only
  exception).

- Please do not arrive on campus more than 10 minutes before
your child's drop-off or pick-up time. This causes great
  congestion in the traffic process.

Students in grades 3 - 12 are invited to try out for the all-school play, Shrek, The Musical! Auditions are scheduled for August 19 between 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the High School Chorus Room. If your child is interested, please feel free to email Ms. Walden, Lower School Drama teacher for more information.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dear Middle School Families,

We had a wonderful first day in middle school! I visited all of the classrooms and was thrilled to see your children, so eager for the upcoming year. We are 270+ students strong this year, joined by two dozen fabulous faculty members, all united in our middle school family.

In what seemed to be a quick seven hours, we were positively productive, with locker and laptop setup, supply organization, introductions, tours, and taking care of the following:

- Students logged into Skyward to check the message center,
where they reviewed the Middle School Program Guide and
their Grade Level Overviews (6, 7, 8). They visited grade
sections so everyone is aware of monitoring progress
throughout the year. Parents, please familiarize yourself
with Skyward usage, as it is a helpful resource.

- We visited Edmodo. Parents are welcome to peruse these
Edmodo "cyber-classrooms" for daily agendas, lesson
  documents, and more.

- Students received their WPS Communication Folders to be
used throughout the year for to-and-from school-to-home
communication. Today, you'll find forms to be signed and
returned by Monday (if you haven't done so already):
Handbook Agreement, Locker Policy, Field Trip Form.
Also look for a letter from your homeroom teachers and
  your parking permit.

- We distributed WPS planners, and guided students to add
important dates to the calendar. For a "big picture" of all
events, refer to our middle school calendar.

Tomorrow, students are asked to come to school in WPS P.E. uniforms for our team-building event, "Middle School Mania." Report to homerooms as usual, but you do not need to bring laptops or backpacks, just a water bottle and sunscreen, as needed. After visiting various stations with your teams, you'll enjoy a cookout lunch in the gym. We're looking forward to celebrating this annual middle school tradition once again.

FINE ARTS
WPS Fine Arts

For many students in the arts, summer vacation is the perfect time to hone their skills. Eigth grader, Emilie Scheetz, did just that by spending most of her summer rehearsing and performing Shrek: The Musical with the Orlando Repertory Theater. While the show at the REP wrapped up on August 4, Emilie won't be leaving the fairy tale world of Shrek behind for long. Emilie will be making the jump from her roll as a Duloc Citizen and Rat Tapper in the REP production, to Princess Fiona in the Windermere Prep production this fall.

Emiie is pictured with drama teacher Cindy Lowa.

Shrek WPS Theatre Department will be holding auditions for "Shrek, The Musical" on August 19 - 20 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. in Ms. Tousek's Chorus Room. Callbacks will be on Friday, August 21. Click for more information and forms.

Instrument try-outs for all beginning band students (4th-12th grade) will be held on Tuesday, August 27 from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.in the Band Room (#337).
