LOWER SCHOOL

Dear Families,

We are back and ready to soar into the final few weeks of the school year! There are many wonderful celebrations of learning scheduled in the next two months. Please make sure you check the weekly newsletter for important dates and times. We look forward to sharing these special events with you.

Our Lower School Student Government Representatives were proud to represent their peers in presenting a check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the amount of $1,014.25 on Tuesday afternoon. The money was raised in honor of our Lower School Nurse, Mrs. Schwartz, and her fight against breast cancer. It was a true act of love by our students. Nurse Leslie is humbled by their constant out pouring of love and support.

In the same mLS 4-5anner, our fabulous 2021 Club students presented over 36 cases of collected hygiene items to the Orlando Union Rescue Mission the week before Spring Break. Our Lower School students prove time and again that you are never to young to make a difference in lives of other people. The spirit of "Unitas" thrives in their desire to help make the world a better place.

ls 2 A very special shout out to Mrs. Caroline Kane! Out of the kindness of her heart, Mrs. Kane regularly collects the items out of the lost and found bin and takes them home to launder. If they have names in them, she happily returns the clothing to the rightful owner. We are so grateful for this act of kindness!

WPS ROBOTICS TEAM COMPETES IN NEW ORLEANS

Two weeks ago, Dominic Roe, Nabeel Ahmad, David and Adam Molnar, Rapolas Binkys, Avina Harry, and Anthony, members of Robotics Team 1649, went to New Orleans, Louisiana for a regional robotics competition. Mrs. Brantley, a middle school math teacher, sponsors the team along Mr. Brown, a high school physics teacher. They traveled with chaperone Indira Harry, and team mentors Doug Dixon and Arnaldo Santiago.

The robot they built was great! The WPS team made it to the quarterfinals out of 59 teams. Everyone was an essential part of the team. Rapolas, Avina, Adam, and David were on the drive team, and as human player, David threw Frisbees across the field and into the 3-point goals many times! Dominic, and Nabeel talked to other teams, and promoted our team throughout the entire event. Anthony also got a lot of attention as our mascot, dressed up in all blue and wearing a yellow wig.

The members of the team worked together during the entire competition, and also helped other teams fix problems that they had with their robots. They did a great job, and can't wait for next season! Be sure to come out to the Food Truck event being held at school this Friday and see the robot that was built for this season's game!

HS Juniors Learn to Tell Their Story

On Tuesday, all WPS juniors attended an important three-hour seminar presented by national speaker, writer, and college admissions specialist, Peter VanBuskirk. Students were taught about the varying admissions approaches of colleges, which is  dependent on the college selectivity index, and how to identify best fit colleges based on their skills and interests.

The program, entitled "Telling Your Story", focused on assisting students with this critical component of the college application process. Students received detailed instructions and strategic tips on essay writing and interviewing. Student feedback expressed that the session was "very productive", and that the students feel better prepared to tell their story to their personal  best fit colleges. One student said "I was surprised how interesting it was - I mean, I didn't think a three hour program on college essays could be that informative!"

College Panel Visits WPS

In late March, the Global Citizens Ambassador Program (GCAP) hosted a college panel discussion focused on the diversity of students competing for acceptance in today's U.S. colleges. The panel included Benet Bondi (current Admission Representative at the University of Alabama), Robyn Roman (former Admissions Representative at Harvard University) and Laura Lopez (Boston College Alumni).

Throughout the evening, the panel addressed the types of students applying to U.S. colleges (domestic students, international students attending U.S. High Schools and International students studying abroad). They addressed how the diversity of admitted students affects the overall culture of a college campus. Families were provided with first-hand knowledge on what to look for in a college, the importance of finding a good fit, both personally and educationally. Also provided were tips on choosing a major, and the varying levels of importance colleges place on application materials.  The panel also discussed the importance of personal interaction between the student and College Admissions Representative throughout the application process.
