FINE & PERFORMING ARTS
Visual Arts
WPS Ceramics classes had a very eventful semester. Hand building techniques paired with pieces produced on the pottery wheels created many fine works. The new semester holds even more progress as students expand the use of our pottery wheels and produce large clay sculptures. This art will be on display in the WPS "Masterpieces in May". Clockwise from top left:
Patrick Hanson, Kate Kiely; Karen Wilhelm; Abby Lahnston; Layla Wang.
Dance Performances
WOW! What a great dance performance from all the LS,MS, and HS dancers at the end of last semester. More than 150 students performed in the holiday dance showcase. We can't wait to see what these talented young students will bring us in 2013!

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Dear Middle School Families,
Happy New Year! 18 weeks lie ahead of us in Semester Two. It's time to reflect on Semester One, then review, renew, and refresh. At our ceremony yesterday, I encouraged students to take hold of every moment of those 18 weeks and make each of them count, seizing every opportunity for growth this new year. As the common sentiment goes, "Fortune favors the bold." So, be bold, grasp 2013 and make it matter. The harder you work, the luckier you get.
To that end, students, make your portfolios matter. Tomorrow, you'll attend your Semester Conference to review your personal portfolio. Recall that revision is key in the portfolio process; never settle for just "good enough." Keep revising; keep bettering your product (and yourself!) to showcase your work professionally. Writing is indeed the soul on paper; as such, your portfolio is a peek into who you are. Represent yourself with poise, power, and professionalism as you open your book, write your story, and turn the page.
With each grade level focusing on age-appropriate challenges, the 8th graders are presented with the pinnacles of these challenges as they "Turn the Page." Students received their "Turning a Page" packets, reviewed the requirements, and participated in class and grade level discussions regarding the program. Semester Two will be busy, exciting, and challenging for the 8th graders as they transition to high school. Every student has a hard copy of the packet; additional documents are posted in Skyward and Edmodo.
New PE Program Kicks Off
We have great news for our Middle School Physical Education students! Each grade level has a new "benchmark" unit of study, one that exposes students to experts in athletic fields. Golf, tennis, swimming - these units are sure to be a "win" for everyone, especially because the instruction is delivered by professionals, and done so in small groups. Click to read the full story.
Spelling Bee
Best wishes to our class finalists in the Spelling Bee next week: (6th) Danica Jefferies, Natasha March, Skylar Marosi, Shanthi Ramakrishna,Tabish Riaz. (7th) Vincent Kha, Tori Lahnston, Mason Russell, Clarissa Barquist, Brett Masson. (8th) Serene Shbaklo, Zeeshan Ahmed, Kate Lucas, Hannah McGee, Cristian Guerrero, and Amelia Martin.
2013 holds much in store for all of us, so make note of the dates listed. And, as many of you know, we'll welcome Baby Williams in early February. Many students have asked what they can do for Mrs. Williams. Thus, we've decided to gift her with a library of children's books to read with her baby. If you're interested in being a part of this gift, we'll present them to her on January 24. Just add your name and selected title to this list, or see Mrs. Webster.
