Spot 127 Transitions Into KJZZ News Operations
By Mark Moran, Associate General Manager, News
KJZZ's Spot 127 youth media program empowers high school students through professional mentorship, teaching them skills in all forms of digital media production. The free after school program focuses on helping youth learn critical thinking skills, building self-confidence and developing writing, photography, and audio/video techniques.
Spot 127 was conceived of and formed as a strategic initiative, but is now transitioning into the KJZZ News operation, giving the students even more direction and instruction in digital media storytelling techniques. The Spot 127 facility is located in the Phoenix suburb of Maryvale, where the public school District has a 91% free or reduced lunch rate. Kids from other Valley cities participate, too, and often drive or use public transportation to get to Spot 127. Our full-time Instructional Team interviews and meets with each student applicant before starting the program. Then, based upon the assessment, the youth are placed into small working groups. So, KJZZ isn't just news and music. Together, we are helping to equip our youth for the next chapter in their lives, which could include a path to higher education, job skills and self-confidence, all while using creative energy and digital communication skills to help change our world.

The Composers
By Blaise Lantana, Music Director
Do you have a favorite jazz composer? I can never decide. I always enjoy the Gershwin Brothers with tunes like Summertime, S'wonderful and Our Love is Here to Stay. The tunes lend themselves to lots of variations and still hold the form. Another one of my favorites is Cole Porter with Night and Day, I love Paris and I've Got you Under My Skin. Porter wrote both lyrics and music, like Irving Berlin who wrote White Christmas, I've got my Love to Keep me Warm and Blue Skies. Jimmy Van Huesen (Chester Babcock) wrote Here's That Rainy Day, Darn that Dream and All the Way, he worked with lyricist Sammy Cahn and Frank Sinatra recorded many of their songs. Read more. FPRAZ Board Member Establishes Leadership Committee to Exchange Health and Technology Information
By Suzanne Pfister
President & CEO St. Luke's Health Initiatives
For more than a year, the development team at KJZZ began talking to a variety of local health-related organizations about expanding health, science and innovation reporting. These topics have always held a great deal of interest with the public, and local organizations have been pioneering new products and treatments that are worthy of broader coverage. The premise was that Arizona is full of innovative health and science efforts, yet many of these stories will not entice traditional commercial media because they are sometimes harder to communicate.
