Dear K-BACH Listeners,

Sterling Beeaff
Sterling Beeaff
The warmer weather is inevitable but things are heating up at K-BACH too! We are pleased to introduce exciting new initiatives including the Mobile App, the Music Mentor, and a special showing of Nodame Cantabile, a Japanese movie at the FilmBar.

I had a chance to sit down with Keitaro Harada, Music Director of the Phoenix Youth Symphony and Associate Conductor of Arizona Opera.  I always wondered why classical music is so important in Japan so I asked Keitaro.  He told me about a hit comic book series
called Nodame Cantabile, about two aspiring classical musicians.  The comic book has been adapted to motion pictures with several classical music soundtrack albums.  This Japanese phenomenon has increased the number of youth who want to listen to classical music.

We've partnered with the FilmBar to show the movie, Nodame Cantabile, on Sunday, June 1st at 2pm (815 N 2nd St., Phoenix).  K-BACH staff will be there to greet you and Keitaro Harada will talk about the movie.  We hope to see you at there!  For more information or to buy tickets, visit the FilmBar website.

It's been wonderful to have you tell us about who made classical music come alive for you. If you haven't submitted your music mentor, please share your story. We left an apple on the piano so you wouldn't miss the "Music Mentor".

K-BACH can now go anywhere with you, download the Mobile App at Google Play or the Apple Store. We love to go wherever YOU go!

Thanks so much for your support of a great resource for the Valley of the Sun, all Classical K-BACH.

A Tribute To Dad
Janine 1st Communion With Dad
First Communion With Dad
By Janine Miller, Announcer and Producer
Weeknights 7:00 pm - midnight
With Mother's Day behind us, I find myself thinking about Father's Day, a holiday that doesn't get nearly as much press.  In music, as in life, my mom taught me to practice and work hard.  But it was dad who taught me to have FUN with music...and to love music and people with all of my heart.

Some of my earliest memories involve my dad, without any musical training, playing his old weathered banjo.  Many nights after dinner, I would dance, twirl and jump to the music until I was dizzy!  My father also taught me to have an "attitude of gratitude" and that you could always find something good about someone if you would just take the time to look.  Read More

Book Notes
Beethoven: The Man Revealed
By Randy Kinkel, Announcer and Producer
Beethoven: The Man Revealed by John Suchet.  If there is such a thing as an entertaining, fun to read page-turner biography of the complicated genius Ludwig Van Beethoven, it is the recent book, written by DJ, Journalist and Classical music fan John Suchet.  Beethoven, The Man Revealed is not only an accurate recounting of the facts of Beethoven's life, but it also attempts to make sense of his talent in the context of the conditions surrounding the young composer, his temperament, family life, the challenges he faced and to get at the heart of the personality of the man who gave us so much great music.

Volunteer Update
Thank You K-BACH Volunteers For Making A Difference
Carol Maffuccio, Volunteer Coordinator
K-BACH Volunteer April 2014
K-BACH Volunteer Mares Wright
K-BACH held its first fund drive for 2014 the last week of February. We welcomed 22 volunteers spread out over 5 days to be the friendly frontline voices that answer phone calls from our listeners during on-air fundraisers. These dedicated individuals donated a combined total of 74.5 hours to make our K-BACH fundraiser a success.

The First Press Fine Wine Auction was held on March 8th, and 27 volunteers donated over 131 hours to create a fundraising evening that was spectacular. We are now seeking volunteers who can serve on our year round committee, which includes securing tables and auction items for next year's event.

K-BACH hosts four fundraisers throughout the year and we are always looking for genial faces and voices to support our efforts to sustain K-BACH quality programming. In addition, there are other opportunities across the Division of Public Service where volunteers can make a difference.

For more information about how to become a volunteer, contact Carol Maffuccio at 480-774-8300 or cmaffuccio@rioradio.org.  We appreciate our volunteers!
