Dear KJZZ Listeners,

Often, the best ideas for news stories happen nowhere near the newsroom. That's one of the reasons that KJZZ is completely revamping the area where our reporters work. Before the makeover, KJZZ's journalists were boxed into cubicles that didn't exactly inspire creativity and inventiveness.

Collaboration is the keyword in the new environment, which features wide open spaces where reporters can exchange ideas, check facts and plan for the future. Most importantly, the space is designed so that nobody is ever sitting in the same place two days in a row; it's truly collaborative and flexible. It's the same direction being taken by many of the country's Fortune 500.

Taking down barriers fosters increased communication, more vibrant workers, better story ideas, more productivity and, in the end, more news stories for you, our listeners! While the newsroom itself will be state of the art, the reporters, ironically enough, will be encouraged to spend less time in it than they do in the current setup.

KJZZ's reporters are in the community, close to you, digging beyond the headlines to tell important stories in our community.  Thanks to some new software, our journalists won't have to leave the site of a breaking news story to get it to air; they will be able to send their stories remotely, without losing the high quality sound you've come to expect on KJZZ.

Our thanks to Deeann Griebel for her generosity in helping fund our newsroom.  Look for updates in the not too distant future!  View photos of the newsroom.

Volunteer Update
No Volunteers During On-Air Fundraisers Continues
Conference Room During Newsroom Construction
KJZZ reporters, hosts and production staff work in the conference room during
newsroom construction.
The friendly voices of our KJZZ volunteers who answer phones during on-air fundraisers are still on hold while construction of the new KJZZ newsroom continues.

The KJZZ conference room is a busy area filled with
reporters, on-air hosts and production staff sharing space until their new work area is ready.  The new facilities are scheduled to be completed in December; everyone is excited to see the new collaborative space.

We look forward to seeing our volunteers again when the renovations are complete.  Watch for more information via email.  Learn more about volunteering.

"I listen to KJZZ daily - every time I am in my car.  Just recently I happened to listen to current events, history, politics, and new book information all within 20 minutes or less. All - commercial free.  Where else can one find such quality and diversity in the media?  Nowhere.  Are you too busy to listen during the work week? Try Saturdays and Sundays for humor, cooking and human interest, just to name a few.  Thank you KJZZ."

Spot 127: KJZZ's Youth Media Center
Working Poor Tax Credit
By Greg Pereira, Executive Director Spot 127
KJZZ's SPOT 127 Youth Media Center LLC is now a qualifying organization for the Working Poor Tax Credit!

The State of Arizona offers a tax credit that is designed to assist the working poor in our community. Unlike deductions and exemptions, which reduce the amount of your income that is taxable and doesn't necessarily result in a dollar for dollar deduction-- tax credits reduce the actual amount of tax owed.

Donations to SPOT 127 LLC will provide instruction and job training to youth throughout the Valley while reducing the actual amount of taxes that you owe. Taxpayers filing as "single" and "head of household" status may claim a maximum credit of $200. Taxpayers that file as "married filing joint" may claim a maximum credit of $400.

Getting To Know The Board
By Laura W. Martin Ph.D., Secretary, FPRAZ Board Member

I have to thank my dog, Tulip, for my involvement in KJZZ / K-BACH.  I walk her in a park where I became friends with another dog-walker, Karen Greenberg.  We had a lot in common including reading, food and wine, current events, and travel.  Karen was a member of the FPRAZ Board and thought I would make a good member.  She organized lunch with Lou Stanley and Linda Saunders, the FPRAZ Board Chair, in an informal interview.  I wasn't sure what I had to offer the Board since a) I am not a powerful patron of the arts and, b) I like wine but didn't know anything about wine auctions which the Board was supporting.  I did, however, offer a background in educational media and was a big fan, which they thought worked.

The Board shared camaraderie, wine, and passion for getting stories straight. After an enlightening Board retreat on the role of non-profit boards led by Allison C. Black, I got it: we all had our roles and contribution to make.  I helped with Wavelength, the station magazine and, of course, participated in the galas and events that were organized.

While the cast of characters on the Board has evolved its enthusiasm and dedication are thriving.  We applaud SPOT127, as well the amazing reporting and programming changes that the staff is making.  Thanks to Lou for divesting me of any hard work as Board Secretary, except for lifting pens to sign checks!
