Head of School: Reflections on David Brooks's The Road To Character

I recently spent two days at Calvin College, an outstanding Christian college of academic distinction located in Grand Rapids, Mich. Invited to participate in a "big tent" program for Christian school heads from across North America, I found myself in conversations with fellow educators about the bestseller The Road to Character, a book by New York Times columnist David Brooks. The book strikes a chord with Christians who fear their children's spiritual and character development is at risk. These concerns, shared and voiced by the heads attending, are founded on the premise that we live in a self-absorbed age in which children have been led to believe that they are the center of the universe and can do little wrong... Unforgettable Moments From A Pisgah Passage To Europe

Picking a favorite memory from the May 2015 Pisgah Passage to France and Belgium should have been a simple task, but upon setting out to do so, I found it nearly impossible. Was it the moment when - before we even left the United States - a group of soggy, tired, hungry teenagers burst into strains of the airborne infantry cadence while marching down the slopes of Mount Currahee? Was it the quiet breakfast filled with expectation on our first day in Europe as we sat and contemplated the adventure before us; a breakfast of bread so fresh that it was still warm from the bakery two blocks away, sliced meats and cheeses, Nutella and chocolate? Bringing The Bible To Life: The Middle School Tabernacle Project

Last month, middle school students in Bible teacher Emily Harrington's class went all out to bring the Tabernacle to life. Their Bible lesson project produced some impressive results, including the Ark of the Covenant, a bronze altar with a whirring fire, a menorah that lights up and much more. Click here to watch a brief video about the project.

Sixth And Seventh Graders' Day Of Service

On Oct. 14, sixth and seventh graders embarked on a day of service! We eagerly loaded the buses and were excited for the fun-filled activities that lay before us at the YMCA. Upon our arrival, we met the YMCA staff and learned more about the organization's history of service to communities all across America. Click here to read more.
TouchMath: A Multi-Sensory Approach

In September, Preschool Half Day introduced a new curriculum, TouchMath. A multi-sensory approach to learning early math skills, TouchMath helps reach our students through visual, auditory, social and tactile learning methods, providing many different ways for them to understand math concepts. Combining weekly themes with games and activity sheets, our teachers have been gradually incorporating this curriculum into their lessons, and our students love it. Click here to read more.
Reaching The Whole Child: Body, Mind And Spirit

Children may be small, but they are mighty. Packed into those little bodies is the power to change the world, and educating the future requires us to address the needs of the whole child - body, mind and spirit. In October, this whole-child approach was highly apparent during two weeks of special programs and activities. Click here to read more.
Athletics: Winding Down And Gearing Up

It is hard to believe that fall sports are winding down and that winter sports are upon us. Many of our fall programs have had encouraging seasons, and varsity football and cross country are gearing up for their post-season push. On Nov. 6, varsity football will have its last regular season game. We hope that you can join us that evening as it will also be "Senior Night," when we honor our senior football players and cheerleaders. Click here to read more.
Eighth Grade Team-Building Event

In October, while sixth and seventh grade students had a day of service at the local YMCA, the eighth grade team spent a day at the Perimeter Ropes Course that served the students in many ways, teaching them about themselves, their classmates, and their teachers. The morning was dedicated to a variety of team-building activities, such as rope-swinging from one platform to another and passing a tennis ball down a series of individual gutters. Paint Pouring Community Project

This year, the arts department introduced a new 3D design class in which the students are exploring various types of sculpture and media in 3D art, including community projects. This semester, we created a community project to align with September's "Concert under the Stars" Disney theme. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," which was notably featured in Disney's Fantasia, was the inspiration for it. We looked at the repeated pouring of water into the well and connected it to the artist, Holton Rower, and his "pour paintings." Rower creates sculptures by repeatedly pouring cups of paint over cubic forms to create visual rhythm. Click here to read more.
Science Experiments At Preschool Full Day: A Hands-On Approach

At Preschool Full Day, children conduct science experiments. This hands-on style of learning encourages students to explore and ask questions while fostering an excitement to discover. One such example was an experiment conducted by our two-year-olds that utilized milk, food coloring and dish soap. Click here to read more.

Help Mount Pisgah Each Time You Shop!

November is Grocery Link Month! Many companies are committed to education, and one way they show their support is to "give back" to schools in the form of cash contributions or merchandise. We all shop for groceries, clothes, books and household items - how often do you shop at Publix, Kroger or Target? - and you can turn those shopping trips into easy money for the School, and encourage friends and family to do the same. We hope that the entire Mount Pisgah Christian School community will participate in these free reward programs that add up to thousands of dollars for Pisgah Parent Assocation-supported school initiatives. Please click here for more information.
Pisgah Parents Association Gives Back!

In October, PPA donated a portion of funds raised during the 2014-2015 school year to Mount Pisgah Christian School in support of the technology program. Pictured is Head of School John Marshall accepting the $5,000 check from PPA President Kelly Kruse. Thank you to all of the hard-working PPA volunteers for your generosity!
