Outgoing President's Message

As my tenure as president of NASPOG draws to a close, I wanted to thank all of our members for allowing me to serve in this capacity for the last two years.  It has been a pleasure getting to know many of you through our interactions at past meetings and planning for upcoming events.  With a successful past meeting in Columbus and a renewed affiliation with our international colleagues in ISPOG, NASPOG remains a relevant organization for those of us concerned with issues surrounding women's mental health.

Any organization benefits greatly from the involvement of its members, and I again encourage anyone with interest to become more involved in the society.

We have recently formed a new membership committee to encourage the recruitment and retention of members in NASPOG, and there are two Member-at-large positions on the Executive Board that are available each year.  If you have interest in joining either of these committees, please let Debby Tucker know.

Thanks again, and I look forward to many more years of worthwhile and educational experiences with NASPOG!

Jonathan Schaffir,  NASPOG Immediate Past President

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month & Campaign
May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness month worldwide. During this month each year, the National Coalition for Maternal Mental Health aims to spread the word about resources and support available to new moms so they do not have to suffer needlessly and silently with depression, anxiety and other treatable illnesses.

This year's theme is "Watching Out For You", and they would like you to help them watch out for mothers and babies by sharing taking part in this year's campaign.

The goals are to increase awareness and end stigma, and your participation in any or all of the week's planned awareness activities can reach thousands of mothers who may be in desperate need of help.

Between Monday, May 4th and Sunday, May 10th, Mother's Day:

  • Retweet and share daily messages to raise awareness on maternal mental health issues, the number one complication of childbirth. You can see these messages now but make sure to pull them daily during the Campaign from:
  • Choose and print a poster from the NCMMH and hang somewhere in your community! It can be a coffee shop, a doctor's office, the grocery store, library, or daycare. Anywhere a mom can see. Make sure to a grab a friend and take a picture! Post photos on social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, using the hashtags #watchingoutforyou and #momsmatter. Posters are available for download here!
