Report on ISPOG in Berlin

NASPOG  is now included among the

19 national societies making up the International Society for Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISPOG).

We were pleased to be included in their recent clinical meeting that took place May 22-25 in Berlin, Germany.

Representatives of NASPOG who presented at this year's meeting included Teri Pearlstein, who spoke on eating disorders and reproduction; Meir Steiner, who discussed depression and cardiovascular disease in women; Jonathan Schaffir, who presented on sexual effects of hormonal contraception; and David Baram, who shared his experience with a biopsychosocial approach to pregnancy termination for genetic anomalies.

The meeting took place in the Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus of the Charite medical center, one of the oldest continuously operating medical centers in Europe. Attendance at the meeting allowed the opportunity to appreciate both the new and the old.   Much of the new research that was presented dealt with fear of labor and Cesarean delivery on demand, cross-cultural experiences with violence against women, and research in sexual dysfunction.

Highlights of the meeting that featured more historical aspects included a medical history tour of the medical center, and a social evening at the lecture hall ruins of what is now a museum of medical history.

The organizers of the Berlin meeting were universally welcoming and expressed their pleasure in having NASPOG return to participation in this international group.
