Modern Establishes Scholarship at ICO
Goal: Encourage Diversity in Optometry
We have wonderful news to share. Modern Optical International, in conjunction with the National Optometric Association (NOA), has established a new scholarship program within Illinois College of Optometry (ICO). The purpose is to encourage, support, and underscore the importance of minority students in the field of optometry.
In a presentation at the ICO on October 22, 2015 (see photo to the left) , Ken Weissman, President of Modern Optical, awarded the scholarship to its first recipient, Ms. Michelle Lynch.  A native of Connecticut, Ms. Lynch dreamed of being an optometrist from a very young age. As her interest in the sciences grew, she identified her career path and successfully enrolled as a first year student at the ICO this fall. Ms. Lynch is also a member of the National Optometric Student Association.

"We are very proud to establish this scholarship at ICO, one of the country's leading optometric institutions," said Ken Weissman. "Our long-standing partnership with the NOA has increased our awareness regarding the need for minority students in this field. Both of our organizations are firm believers in the power of education and the importance of delivering quality vision care services to minority communities. We are proud to commit our resources to the professional advancement of minority students at ICO."

Making Computer Eyewear Affordable
Value Eyewear Plays a Key Role
According to The Vision Council, computer eyewear represents the largest growth opportunity in optometry. Yet the specialty lenses required to make a quality pair of these glasses can price the patient right out of the market. How does your practice make this an affordable purchase?

First, qualify your patients needs. We have all heard about the health risks associated with digital eye strain. Seemingly tethered to their cell phones, millennials are by far the most screen-obsessed generation with 40% spending at least nine hours a day on their digital devices. Younger kids are on a similar track with 24% spending at least three hours a day staring at a screen. Adults don't fair much better if their profession requires heavy computer usage. Each of these demographics could benefit from a dedicated pair of computer glasses.

Second, utilize value-priced frames to make computer eyewear a viable option. By carefully choosing a quality value frame vendor, the affordability quotient can drastically offset the cost of specialty lenses. Sourcing a vendor that offers both fashion and quality is critical so be sure to assess the depth and breadth of their selection and learn about their warranty policy.

Third, create a marketing program that teaches the benefits of computer eyewear. A marketing trend we have noticed is the packaging of the frame and lens together. Create a display dedicated to computer eyewear so patients can see, touch and feel them. Utilize fashion friendly frames coupled with colored lenses to make the display visually attractive and encourage try ons. Remember to keep both the display and the pricing straight forward to make your patient's purchasing decision as easy as possible.

Finally, contact your Modern Optical Sales Rep about using our frames to meet the growing demand for computer eyewear. Our Yellow and Red Price Groups are particularly applicable.
