MARY-MARGARET O'BRIEN
9/19/2005  - 7/26/16

Every so often in life, we have the opportunity to meet very special people.  Mary-Margaret O'Brien  was one of those very special people.  Yes, we know she was a little dog, a Yorkshire Terrier to name the breed, but we considered her, family in the true sense and meaning of the word.
Mary-Margaret was a soulmate and total companion to Michele Dawn.  She was our Yorkie Chaplain and a very important and integral part of Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue, she was a columnist for our Yorkie Times Newsletter, and lead the prayer at our annual awards banquet.  She was a voice to the world that spoke with kindness and love so people were drawn to her spirit.

She became ill and Michele took her to the hospital where it was discovered that she was not going to get better.  She had an enlarged heart, liver and her trachea was weak.  Any treatment would only have given her a short time.  Rather then let her struggle Michele made the hardest decision that had to be made.  In doing so, it showed her love was boundless and strong.  So we say to Ms. Mary-Margaret O'Brien, watch over us, stay close to Michele and feel your wings as you fly free.

Please join us, the Yorkshire Terrier Family, to wish Michele well and say goodbye to our very own Mary-Margaret O'Brien.

I ONLY WANTED YOU

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

Remembering Mary-Margaret O'Brien

Remembering Mary-Margaret O'Brien

She loved to play hide-n-seek.  Around dusk, she'd go outside for one last sniff and maybe a tinkle or two.  Then she'd go sit on the slope among the gazania plants.  It was not quite dark and in the twilight she'd blend in perfectly with the plants.  She'd stay as still as a mouse as I'd call her, sometimes panicking that she'd somehow been carried off by an eagle or a vulture.  I'd grab my halogen flashlight and scan the yard until I saw a flash of bright pink, the color of her little name tag.   "You silly thing!", I'd say.  "Get in the house!" and I could hear her little laugh as she raced inside.

In the morning she'd go to the back wall and stand on her tippy-toes.  She'd yap a couple of friendly barks and pretty soon one or two of the feral cats would poke their heads over the wall and say "Hello and Good Morning, Mary-Margaret!".  They'd play like this for a while and then skitter away until the next day.

When she saw a sick rat making his way across our back yard, she walked over and watched it.  I said "NONNONONONO" thinking she had something else in mind, but she didn't.  She stayed by the rat as it made it's way across the yard, and sat with it until it passed away.   She sat next to it until I came and got her.  She was kind and loving like that.

We were on a Southwest flight to Nashville the year before last and a young newlywed couple boarded.  The wife and husband were sitting separately and the wife was crying.  It had been a long day and she wanted to sit with her husband.  The woman next to us switched places with her and she settled into the middle seat, still shedding tears of exhaustion.   Mary-Margaret climbed into her lap and started giving her kisses.  They snuggled and then both curled up together and slept the rest of the flight.  This is something Mary-Margaret did without thought.  She soothed people and loved on them.  She always knew what would help.

In Nashville one year I remember that the AKC lady was giving a demonstration with her own dogs as to the test that our pups would take.  After each example the lady gave her pup a treat.  Most of the other dogs in attendance were snoozing, but Mary-Margaret watched intently.  About half-way through she hopped off the chair and joined in the demonstration, executing each command with precision and accuracy.  When it was over, she got her treat and then came back to her chair.   When the test was given, she got 100%.  Not only was she sweet, but smart, too!!

When she was only 9 weeks old she started "puppy school".  She was an excellent student and got along very well with ALL the little pups.  She graduated "magna cum laude" (if there is such a thing in puppy school) and she was invited to keep attending so she could mentor the new class of pups.  She was an excellent teacher and only once did I see her discipline another pup.  A little black and white Shih Tsu was behaving like boys do and she was having none of it.  She told him politely to back off and he kept at it.  Finally, my teensy little probably 3 1/2 pounder at that time took her front paw, flipped him on his back and straddled him.  The other pups gathered around and enjoyed the show.  After that, the little Shih Tsu was a perfect gentleman.  She knew how to get her point across.

We were visiting friends in New Jersey a while back and had a great time.  She loved playing with their Yorkies (Rhett and Scarlett)  and her fiance "Hashimoto" and when it was time to go she said "Nope!".   She turned around and headed into the woods, all the time telling us in her own way that she was not leaving.   It took a while to catch her, especially while we were laughing at her stubbornness.

Her life is documented at www.mary-margaretsdiary.blogspot.com, although for the past year she's been posting more often to Facebook than to her blog.

She loved being your Chaplain, and took great pride in working with Julie Gedro in giving the invocation at the Yorkie Family and Friends get together.   She was employed full-time as our Receptionist and Head of Public Relations at Rancho Attorney Service of California.  She has been writing a monthly column for this Newsletter faithfully for several years.   She even created the Yorkie Brigade Chapel and held Sunday services for all creatures, fur and feathers, for one entire year.

My heart is so heavy to hear this devastating news.

Michele, we are all holding you close in love and prayer.

Your sweet baby girl touched each of us in so many ways.

There are no words of comfort we can offer that will ease your pain.

We can only share your grief and offer ourselves in any way you might need.

When you can't sleep and the hole in your heart is too much to bear, you can call me in the middle of the night to cry, yell, pray, or just be.

Neeko Red
Neeko remembering Mary-Margaret O'Brien

Our hearts are heavy with sadness and tears over our Superstar, Mary-Margaret's crossing the Rainbow Bridge. She was one Gorgeous Lady inside and out. We feel blessed, humbled and honored for having her grace our lives over the years with her lovely and witty personality.

Meee would like to share with you all, one of our Sunday services from our Yorkie Brigade Chapel. Mary-Margaret was our Chaplain.

~  "Truth"
Welcome to Chapel this BEE-YOO-TI-FULL Sunday. It's so nice to see you all again. Today we'll be talking about "Truth".

Sir Winston Churchill once said "Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened ".

Two pups are discussing their view of the Grand Canyon. The first pup describes it as the biggest hole he's ever seen and he hopes he doesn't get blamed for it. The second pup describe sit as a river surrounded by sheer rock walls all around. Both are describing the exact same scene but one is at the top of the canyon and the other is at the bottom. Both are telling the truth from their own point of view.

Last week, Mom saw me hunched over something and barking like crazy. The something (actually a rat) ran over to the fence and I followed it. When we both reached the corner of the yard, the rat died and Mom assumed I killed it. Not wanting to burst her bubble I played along. That was her truth, and no harm was done. My truth, though, was that I had an encounter with a sick rat and I was comforting him. Everett, our exterminator, tends to side with me.

Seriously, folks, rats are nocturnal and this was in broad daylight. I still have the original squeakies in my baby toys. I'm just not a murderer. I barked for Mom to come fix him but she didn't understand. I tried to help and I failed, so I prayed with him. I guess you could say I was giving him "last rites"?

The truth depends on perspective. One believes a truth based only on the information they have in their possession, but an entire truth consists of a kaleidoscope of facts, some requiring research and deep thought to understand.

"Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.", said Benjamin Franklin. The vision of me sitting over a dead rat was only half the story. As Galileo said almost 400 years earlier, "All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.".

Once the pieces of a story come together, the truth became apparent and is evidenced and proven by hard facts instead of by assumptions. "A lie told often enough becomes the truth", as Lenin once said. Let us all be more like Diogenes and search to discover honesty and truth in its purest form.

Please turn to your neighbors and wag your tails (or fluff your feathers) as a sign of peace. Again, I am asking for volunteer speakers for upcoming Sundays. We want to hear from all of you about your history, your family, your lives and your loves. Email me privately if you are shy at
kissmeewefool@aol.com . I look forward to talking with you.

The Ladies of the Leather Collar have been experimenting with freeze dried salmon treats. Please stop by their table on your way out and let them know what you think.

Blessings..........
