Editor's Message ~

Over the last (nearly) 20 years of my career in Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue, my household has been characterized by a variety of configurations. For many consecutive years, I have had three Yorkies; mostly males. This is through no intentional engineering, but rather, the result of my going with the flow, which I do well. Currently, the Gedro configuration consists of me, and two males-Nicholas and Leiko. Somehow, my dogs create their own sense of community and communication with each other, and with me. We come into alignment with ease, love and intuition. My dogs go on vacations with me, they travel for work often with me, they have their favorite walks both in Syracuse and in Saratoga Springs (where my employer's headquarters is located). We have a rhythm that we love as a family. It is now time to experience an exiting transition, where all three of us will learn new patterns, new walks, new adventures, new people and new dog friends.  After 13 wonderful years progressing through the tenure track at Empire State College, which is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, here I am, embarking on a major change. I accepted the position of Associate Dean of Business. I thought that when I became a Full Professor (which means the highest one can rise as an academic), that my dreams had indeed come true. And yet, there is more ahead and I am so very grateful. Nicholas and Leiko get to share in my joy. I base so much of my life decisions, or related life decisions, upon the wellbeing of my boys. My new post will be at our beautiful new building in Rochester, New York, which is about 90 miles west of Syracuse (where we live now). Therefore, the boys and I are moving to Rochester at the end of this month. I selected a neighborhood that is extremely walkable and dog friendly, and I do think that the boys sense that we are in for a transition. I am excited for them (and me!) to experience Rochester, and to make new connections as I traverse my path in higher education. Similar to my progression in YTNR, I have hands-on experience as an individual contributor in my organization, and I am thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to play a larger role of influence and strategy.

I suppose my passions have been rather steady throughout my life. I have loved animals since I can remember. I have also loved music, the outdoors, sports, literature, and in these my middle years, I have acquired a passion for travel. No matter the personality, physical conditions, or other factors related to dogs I have rescued, I have always loved them with everything I have. There have been some wonderful characters who have shared my home and stolen my heart. Each one of them has notched a particular chamber of my heart. I have loved each of them without condition. Somehow I think if you are reading this, you can relate. Therefore, this column is dedicated to changes that are wonderful and exciting, such as the ones I am experiencing; it is also dedicated to radical acceptance of oneself and others. Both dimensions of change (one is great; the other is the absence of needing someone to change) are delicious.

I can tell when I am loved and accepted, can't you tell when you are? I love you and accept you.

I leave you with an adapted version of the song "I Don't Want You to Change" by singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick:

I don't want you to be
Anything but who you are
Don't change the way you talk (bark),
How you move or lose the friends (toys)
That got you this far.
So when you feel a hesitation
And think you know how I want you to be,

Remember,
I don't want you
I don't want you
I don't want you to change
I don't want you
I don't want you
I don't want you to change.
Anything.

Blessings,
Julie, Nicholas and Leiko Gedro

Mary-Margaret O'Brien ~ A TBT Post from My Blog
THURSDAY, APRIL 02, 2015

Thursday, March 19, 2015 - I woke up on the cedar chest at the foot of the bed and noticed it was getting light outside. Mom's still snoozing. I saw her foot sticking out from under the covers and decided it was time for her to get up, too. I hopped to the floor, stood on my tippy-toes and started boxing her foot like a prize fighter would a punching bag. "OW OW OW", she said. "Stop that. I don't have to get up until 8:00. Go use your piddle pad."

I sighed and curled up next to the dresser . Not being in the mood to use a piddle pad I figured I could wait another half hour. At eight sharp I started boxing her foot again and telling her in Doglish to wake up and get moving. Today is the day I see Miss Marilyn and get my hair done, nails trimmed, back rubbed, get a bubble bath, have a play date with Rocky or whoever else is there AND get a new ribbon. Last time it was lime green for Saint Paddy's day. Today will be a surprise.

Mom gets up and takes her pills, and then she opens the slider and I go out. This is the best part of my day, seeing who came by to see me last night. I check out the lawn and then patrol the perimeter of my domain. Sometimes it's possum, skunk or squirrel. Sometimes it's feral cats or gophers. I haven't seen any rats or mice for a long time, though. Then I come in and have my breakfast. Usually it's kibbles but sometimes Mom shares her oatmeal with me. Today, I got oatmeal, too. I LOVE oatmeal.

When we turn the corner to Miss Marilyn's place I get really excited and hop up and down. She's one of my best friends. I get the full treatment and Rocky was there today, too. So was Lucy, another Yorkie who looks just like me. We catch up on the neighborhood news and then wait for our moms to pick us up. My ribbon is cotton-candy pink, in case you're interested

On the way back to work Mom stops by Carl's Jr for lunch. She gets the special - 2 Super Stars for $5.00 and another 35 cents for cheese. I get a doggy burger (meat, no seasoning, no bun, nothing). At the office Mom gives one of the Super Stars to Marli who is there filing for us and she cuts up my meat for me. YUM. She already ate hers in the car (how rude as I was starving). Then Marli takes me for a walk. I read my "p-mail", take care of some business and then go back to work.

As I curl up in my work bed and start to nap, I hear "Mary-Margaret, you have a customer!". I get up and walk into the front office, say "Hello", get some scratchies and belly rubs from my client, and then go back to bed. Mom takes it from there. We work until about 7:30PM (which is way past my dinner time) and then I remind Mom that it's time to go home. I sit by the door and stare at her until she says "OK OK...I'm coming!". We grab the mail, turn off the lights, lock the door and go downstairs where I do another piddle before getting into my car seat for the drive home.

This was my day. I wish you all days full of love, peace, joy and productivity.

Until next month, stay well and be happy.

Love,
Mary-Margaret

PRINCESS HAS BEEN ADOPTED

We would like to announce that our Fluffy Little Rescue, Princess, was adopted last weekend to a wonderful family in Illinois.
Please send your good wishes to her for a long and happy
life. Let us know how you are doing, Princess. We will miss you!

I just received these darling photos from my former foster dog, Bella. Her name is now Cola. She won the Cutest Dog contest last Saturday. On May 16th they celebrated her 9th birthday.
It is so rewarding to see how well our former foster dogs are doing once they settle into their new homes. The people that choose to adopt our rescues are the BEST!

We feel like the luckiest family  in the world to have Pixel joining our household.  We, unfortunately, have an active house with a 100 lb German shepherd who is dog aggressive, 2 children, a cat, a parakeet, a gerbil, and a geriatric dog.  I just figured I would have to wait until our household calmed down before we could add a yorkie to our family.  But then Pixel came along and he is the perfect fit.  Everyone that meets Pixel loves him including Rudy, the shepherd.  Within minutes of meeting Pixel, Rudy was licking him.  Rudy absolutely loves him.  They play constantly and Rudy will even play tug of war, chase - where Pixel chases Rudy , and wrestling- where Rudy lays on his side and Pixel pins him to the ground.  They also cuddle together.  Rudy loves to cuddle people but he would never cuddle with our other dog Gunner.  So it was a shock to see Pixel curled up next to Rudy.  Pixel is also super sweet to the cat.  And Pixel even interacts with the parakeet.  He sticks his nose into the cage and Sparkie tweets to him and gives him bird kisses.  Pixel is an extremely active dog.  But luckily he has plenty of individuals to play with him.  As one member of the family gets tired, Pixel just moves on to the next playmate.   This crazy active yorkie found his matching forever home with this crazy active family.

Thank You for opening your hearts and homes for these
precious rescues and making their dreams come true!

Messages from our Happy readers

"Once again read the beautiful newsletter and took time to go back and look at all the pictures. Thanks to all that took part in making it amazing and happy times reading these newsletters. These last few weeks have been so sad as there have been many rough roads traveled with the sweet furbies and even travel made across rainbow bridge. We all know in our hearts that every effort was made to see these little ones were made comfortable no matter the outcome. When reading our newsletter and seeing the happy faces and the sweet eyes of the little rascals,  beautiful pictures of our members,  we know in our hearts all special love has been given one way or another by our group not only this last month from the April to May 2016 newsletter but back years and years. I just want to thank all that have given time and gifts to this beautiful yorkie saving group. I think of what if this group never existed and what would have occurred to all these precious ones taken care of by all these members. And of course there is the one,  especially the one that keeps us  all going month to month and has for years. Thanks to her and all of  you and all of your efforts to save these babies so they will have a happier pain free better life, and also    for your beautiful gifts to these babies to help them have all that is needed to see they are healthy and happy.  And most definitely,  thanks to all who took part in this months lovely newsletter. I look forward to them every month!" ~ Helen

Neeko's Joke ;o)

From a passenger ship, everyone can see a thin bearded man on a small island, shouting and desperately waving his hands.
"Who is it on that island?" a passenger asks the captain.
"I have no idea... but every year when we pass, he goes nuts like
that."
