Happy January to You
Inspired by Leiko Thomas Gedro
Greetings, my beloved Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue Community!
I hope you all had a lovely holiday season. It was temperate in here Central New York, and my brother Nicholas and I had a good time enjoying the mellow festiveness of the holidays. 2016 has started of on an extremely positive note as we both received excellent physical evaluations and blood tests this past month. We are both in the "senior" dog category now, although I doubt that you could tell it. Only when Nicholas gets really tired, late in the evening, does a bit of his age show around his eyes. I think he looks very wise when he gets that look. He is a bit of a vain fellow, so I keep thoughts related to his advancing age to myself. We are both rescues, and although neither of us would admit it to our Mom, we are grateful to have a nice, cozy, rather simple urban life with someone who adores us, dotes on us, and relies on us as her family. All three of us agree that we could not ask for much more. After a two week stretch of enjoying the holidays interspersed with intensive hours of grading final projects from this past semester, our Mom has gone back to her office hours with a vengeance. Nicholas and I are relieved about this, because we have our own routines at home. We love the old girl, but she was starting to cramp our style. We are all now back in our normal groove and it is wonderful.
YTNR continues to succeed in its efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome Yorkshires in challenging circumstances. Our community is stronger than ever, and we are already looking forward to the Annual Friends and Family Weekend this year. This year, we (Nicholas and I) really do intend to attend and we are trying to persuade our Mom to drive down to Nashville. It could happen. We are up for the road trip and for a YTNR reunion.
Here is wishing you a wonderful month of January.
Leiko,
with his brother Nicholas and Mommy Julie

In Loving Memory
|
We would like to make a donation in memory of our dog Kiwi who we had to say good-bye to June 8, 2015. We adopted Kiwi from YTNR on May 28, 2007 and miss her every day. She was 8 years old when we adopted her and had the privilege to spend 8 years with her.
| Our whole family last November |
Here's a few pictures of our Sweetie Kiwi, just 2 days before we said
good-bye with her sisters.
We are so grateful for the time we had with Kiwi and know that would not have been possible without YTNR.

Smoky is awarded the PURPLE CROSS Hero Medal
the world's highest Animal Hero Award
|
Mayor Pam Bobst of the City of Rocky River presented the Purple Cross medal for Smoky the war dog to her handler Bill Wynne at a gathering of 143 at the Rocky River Library on Dec. 11.'15. It is the highest and rarest honor an animal hero can receive. Smoky is only the 10th recipient in 161 years. Nigel Allsopp in Australia on Dec.11 also celebrated the honor at Smoky's memorial at the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital which is located on the site of the former U.S. 109th Navy/Marine Fleet Hospital where Smoky served in August '44 as the second location as the "first Therapy dog of record." (ANIMAL PLANET RESEARCH.)
Smoky was in combat 18 months straight giving her special meaning to all as she was one of them. She also served at the U.S. Army 42nd General Hospital in Brisbane in Aug.'44 (3rd) and in Manila 120th Gen. (#4) in June 1945. (#5) Okinawa Red Cross Club Aug.'45. #6 Parma Hts, Ohio, "Crile Hospital." (Later Cleveland U.S. VA Crile Hospital, Dec.'45. And for 10 years after.
The name "Therapy Dog" was given as a suggestion by a Psychiatrist Dr. Leven in 1964, 20 years after Smoky who with Major/Dr. Charles W. Mayo took her on rounds for five days serving wounded from the Biak IS. invasion coming into the 233rd Station Hospital in July 1944. Smoky was allowed to sleep on my hospital bed for 5 nights between going on rounds. I was in with dengue fever.

Neeko's Joke ;o)
|
~ A man walking down the street noticed a small boy trying to reach the doorbell of a house. Even when he jumped up, he couldn't quite reach it. The man decided to help the boy, walked up on to the porch and pushed the doorbell. He looked down at the boy, smiled and asked, "What now?" The boy answered, "Now we run like crazy!" ~
Love and Smooches, Neeko :o) |
