Editor's Message ~ Perspective

Julie Gedro

Last evening was remarkably lovely in Skaneateles, New York, which is lake village that I had never heard of until I moved up here some 12 years ago. Some friends and I had dinner, ice cream cones, and a stroll and it was a slice of heaven. The springs and summers up here are so lush, so gorgeous, that it almost makes up for the punishing winters. Perspective. Someone once told me "No matter where you go, there you are." I have learned to carry my joy with me. It comes in handy during the short, grey days of Syracuse winters. I have been able to, also, continue to engage in Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue work up here. My house is down to two, both rescues, and I responded to a call last night about an older guy whose owner is going into assisted living. I have not heard back as of the time of this article, but I am quite ready to rescue this guy if it works out.

Sometimes, folks say to me that they could not handle the emotional roller coaster of working in animal rescue. Too heartbreaking. Too difficult. How can you let go of a foster with whom you have bonded? How can you handle seeing some of the darkest behavior of humans?

There is no other way than rescue, I respond. It is always hard to see, hear, learn about, and read about dogs that have been abused or neglected.  If we do not respond, though, who will? It is pointless to permit sadness or anger to exert a paralytic hold on us. It just keeps us bound. I do the best I can to educate, to engage, to respond whenever and however I can in this organization. That is the way that I see through the darkness and into the sunlight.

I wish you and your family a blessed, sunny month of May.

Nikki in Nevada has been adopted by a wonder family in Boulder City Nevada. Everyone is doing the Happy Yorkie Dance.

As the State Director of Nevada (Corrine Ellison), I talked with an applicant wanting to adopt Nikki. I informed them about Nikki's horrendous life before coming to YTNR. We believe Nikki was severely kicked and as a result he is unable to use his back legs like a normal Yorkie. On top of that, Nikki has no control over his bodily functions. Over the two years he has been in foster, have had many applications for him but for everyone I talked with, the bodily functions were a deal breaker.

During my many phone conversation with Ann Sousa the foster mom, she just raved on what a good boy and how sweet Nikki is, and just wanted to please her. Ann Sousa took very good care of Nikki and would have continued to do so forever if needed.

A few weeks ago I received a phone call from Rick DeCosta wanting to adopt Nikki. I told them all about Nikki's special needs and he said it was not a problem.  This made my day! I got the DeCosta's in touch with the foster mom because they had more questions I couldn't answer.

The foster mom called me after talking with Rick DeCosta. He told her nothing she said deterred them from wanting to adopt Nikki.  They sent her pictures of their Yorkie Sparky saying (a great older brother). They were all so excited to meet Nikki! When they arrived at the foster mom's home, they were on the floor playing with him and were pleased that he moved so well.

Ann and I think Nikki knew he was meant to be with this family. Upon leaving it was like he had always been with Rick (a fireman) & Mindy (a teacher) leaving Ann very sad, but happy he went to a wonder forever home.
God Bless them for opening up their hearts and home to Nikki.

Hello, Here is Safari this morning just waking up, she is so cute and happy all the time.
Yesterday was her check up with Dr. Feinberg.  He said that the rolling under of her front feet and walking on her knuckles is due to her genetic makeup and that there is nothing that he can do for her.  He checked her toenails and relieved her anal glands.  I will continue to massage her feet to try to keep them straight for as long as possible.  Good thing she is little and doesn't  have to walk much.

Thank You for opening your hearts and homes for these

precious rescues and making their dreams come true!

RIP Angel Trouble

Trouble was seized by an owl in the middle of the night after a terrible fight.  She was dropped from a great height and I took her broken body since she was still breathing to my vet's this morning. She did not survive. She had gashes all over her body, a broken pelvis and a broken leg and a huge gash in her side.   I did not find her broken body until this morning.  I am destroyed. Trouble was mine for nine years.  She came as a puppy less than three months old and was my first Yorkie.

Cuds and Butter were also injured but not badly trying to drive off the owl. Cuds is an emotional wreck.   Butter is very sad and needy.

Everyone else is very quiet today too.

MaryElizabeth,

Thank you so very much for your thoughtfulness and kindness.  I came home today from dropping off the little Yorkie boy with Corrine and found the memory stone in my mailbox.  I had just stopped at the vet on my way home and picked up Lilly's ashes so the timing was just right.  My sweet little Lilly was 14 1/2 yrs old and was my first rescued Yorkie.  She had been a breeder and had been kept in the basement until she came to us at 5 1/2 yrs.  She is really the reason I decided to join yorkie rescue so I could help more sweet little yorkies like her have a second chance.  She was a joy to my life and she is sadly missed.

Thank you again.  It feels really good to be a part of an organization with people who are so caring.

Boy am I lucky.   Mom went to her dentist today for a "root canal".  I wasn't happy that I couldn't go with her but I'm getting used to it.  Mom+Dentist=I'm house sitting.    So I figured I'd entertain myself in other ways.
Garbage is always a good start.  Usually it's behind a closed cupboard door but today was different.  Mom loaded several trash bags into one big black one and left it on the kitchen floor, drawstrings pulled tightly together.  I smell chicken....mmmm....seafood....yum....coffee grounds (not so great).... and other goodies.  The chicken skin and tidbits were left over from last night and they were buried deep inside a white plastic market bag with handles.  "Why not?", I said, as I poked my head into the bag.  Oh why not, indeed.

Mom got home about 6:30PM and I greeted her at the door wearing a non-biodegradable "gown ".  I had tried to get it off but ended up leaving a trail of white plastic pieces around the house.  Unfortunately for me the main garment was mine until I was rescued.   No harm, no foul (I said), but Mom freaked.

What if I got stuck somewhere and got strangled?  What if I had swallowed some of the bag in trying to get it off?  What if...what if...what if...!   I know she wasn't mad at me, just mad at herself for not being more careful, and for not taking me with her or getting a babysitter.

I think she's learned her lesson and I told her it was ok to educate you all about my experience.  People tend to think us pups can take care of ourselves and don't need any grownups telling us what's ok and what isn't.   How many pups do you know that stay home alone all day all by themselves?  You gotta remember this:  If it smells like chicken, it's fair game for us.

Everyone at the dentist's office missed me, I'm told, and next time I will go to supervise another root canal and the installation of a crown or two.

Love you all.  Please take care of each other. And take the trash out.  We cannot be trusted.

Neeko's Joke ;o)

~ A boy asks his father, "Dad, are bugs good to eat?"
"That's disgusting. Don't talk about things like that over dinner," the dad replies.
After dinner the father asks, "Now, son, what did you want to ask me?"
"Oh, nothing," the boy says. "There was a bug in your soup, but now it's gone."  ~

Love to all,
