Memorial for Jilli Dog

Who would ever think that a Yorkshire Terrier could be a poker player, and through such a lighthearted and clever venue, serve to not only entertain, but inspire us?  Jilli Dog's life was truly larger than life, and she delivered multiple lessons for us all. First, don't ever accept limitations based on your demographics. A poker playing Yorkie helps us understand this. If you want to take on a new challenge, learn a new skill, or expand your horizons in other ways, refuse to let your gender, or race, or ethnicity, or species limit you. Second, appreciate the fact that life can deal you a second chance. Jilli Dog was a stray whom Rick Caran rescued. She certainly drew the lucky card out of the deck of life, pun intended, when Rick found her. Third, love knows no language or culture barriers. Rick and Jilli travelled extensively from what I understand, and had and still have a worldwide following. Finally, live well and enjoy this brief time on earth. Certainly, this was Jilli's story.

I met Rick Caran in person while we were both standing in line to get some lunch at the Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue Annual Gathering in Nashville several years ago. I found him to be larger than life. We bonded pretty quickly. When Rick is in the room, you know he is in the room. Does that make sense? He is a fun loving, generous, sweet, honest, clever, gifted guy., and Rick's creative genius knows few bounds. He is not only a great dog trainer, he is a great dog trainer trainer, enthusiastically inviting audiences to "try this at home." Jilli Dog served faithfully as the Ambassador for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue, representing the organization and speaking up (or barking up?) for those who were homeless, and therefore, voiceless. We are ever grateful to Jilli Dog, and to Rick, for this.

Jilli Dog was one of a kind. She was as smart as she was adorable. The news of her passing hit me hard. I cannot imagine what Rick and Judy (Rick's partner) felt, and still feel.

Personally and individually, I believe that life is eternal. I feel the next dimension, and the presence of my own beloved, departed Yorkies who send me specific signals that they are right here with me. I think that Jilli Dog is at the poker table, with one eye on her hand, and one eye on her Daddy.

Rick and Judy, the entire Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue community has our arms around you, loving you big.

God bless.

Julie

To our wonderful friends/family of YTNR, thank you so much for the emails, phone calls and postings re our sweet Jilli Dog passing. We are broken hearted, and I am so sad as I write this, but I am also so happy and grateful for the wonderful life this tiny, sweet girl has had and has given me, especially our association with YTNR... Thank you Mary Elizabeth for making her a little (but big hearted) ambassador to this wonderful group... We love you all, and it wouldn't be fair to name some but not all of you, but know that we love you. Thank you, Julie G. for posting the 1st message here, and thank you Mary Eliz and Patti Hood, for the amazing Ruby, who proudly carries on the tradition of Jilli Dog.

It's 6am, as I write this, and tears are running down my face, missing sweet Jilli, but I must say, that she was thoughtful enough to give us warning that her little 17 yr old body (possibly 20, she was a rescue of unknown age) could not keep up with her amazing heart and spirit... She has been blind and deaf for more than a year, altho that didn't keep her from finding her way to the 20 min daily practice and fun time with her sisters and brother pups (Ruby, Spidey Chihuahua and Coco, and kitty sisters... Spidey was the only boy :)  She left us on Fri, but as of Tues, she could still pull playing cards from a deck, as in her famous magic card trick

Jilli Dog and the Magic Card Trick
Jilli Dog and the Magic Card Trick

(you should also notice some other videos of her will come up too) Her little body started showing us she was going, suddenly by wednesday, and the vet said she was shutting down. We were prepared to have the vet assist her on to the bridge, but as long as she was in no pain, I kept her with me, on my chest, in my arms (her favorite place), and I heard and felt her final breath in my ear, on Fri morn... Even tho we knew it was coming for days, Judy and I were devastated, and we cried like babies... But we know that she is in a better place, running and spreading smiles for all her friends in Heaven, over the Bridge...

With her wonderful talents, she has taken us around the country and to Europe and Scandinavia. She became the ambassador to YTNR (as well as her sister, Ruby)! Has been on numerous TV shows around the world and landed me a position as a columnist in Yorkie Club Magazine, International, stating in 2006... (which is interesting because I'm not a writer, but I guess they liked what I had to say, and I had a good editor in Judy:)  And Jilli has spread smiles and love in hospitals, senior facilities, schools, fundraisers and events... All 5 lbs of her!-)

I hope to see you soon! LOVE you all! Thank you so much for the love and support of our sweet Jilli Dog...

Julie Gedro ~ Reflections on the 2014 YTNR Friends and Family Weekend of Fun

Where do I start? What a fun, relaxing, and joyful weekend full of laughs and celebration. I left Thursday afternoon for a connecting flight from Syracuse to National in D.C. It was perfect. The layover was just long enough to a have a relaxing late lunch of a crab cake and a Caesar salad. I waved to my big sister out the airport window, as she and her family live in nearby Great Falls, Virginia. Alas, when I texted her that I was waving to her, she texted back that she was in Dublin, Ireland.

The connection from National to Nashville was smooth and efficient. When I landed in Nashville, it felt comfortable and familiar, like it always does. I have been coming to these get-togethers for some 15 years.  Nashville is just a great place to celebrate our love for Yorkies and our dedication to our rescue work.  I took the shuttle from the airport to the hotel, and upon arriving at the hotel, checked in, put the bags in the room, and headed straight to the hospitality suite. It is homecoming, every year.  It is a love fest. The room was full of old friends, and I also met new friends. Of course, the room was full of Yorkies, who were dressed in an array of adorable outfits and accessories. I spent hours just hanging out with everyone. Laughing, catching up on our lives and our rescue efforts, sharing the joys, sorrows, hopes and dreams of this circle of friends at the event I lovingly call "Yorkie Jam."

Friday morning we had our annual face-to-face Board of Directors meeting, we go over the year in review, and then envision our coming year. It was a great morning. Well run. Engaged. Collegial. Effective. One of the remarkable aspects of this organization is the quality of the people involved. Among our ranks we have folks in healthcare, law, law enforcement, education, engineering, counseling, and business. We are a group held together in the common bond of commitment to Yorkie Rescue.

We had a terrific training workshop on Tellington Touch, and I have been doing the "banana slug" move on Nicholas, which has truly taken our relationship to a calmer and more affectionate level. Of course, no Yorkie Jam is complete without a trip to HatWrks. Tina Byers wins the sportswoman of year award for letting us pile into her car to drive down to 8th street for some hat shopping. The ride out and back was, well, one for the books. I bought my second hat from Gigi (the owner), a brown fedora, that I wore on Saturday night. On Friday night, we had a wonderful catered Italian dinner.

Saturday was just a great day all around, because I got to tour a bit of downtown, Amazingly, I wandered into Manuel's, which is the shop of the famous designer himself. There were pictures, coats, and other outfits of Johnny Cash, Porter Waggoner, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and other music legends. Imagine my delight when I was told that Manuel himself was pressing the blue ascot that I bought. Manuel came out of the back, and we chatted for 20 minutes. He never got around to pressing the ascot! Who cares, I say? I met someone who is truly a legend. And I wore a wrinkled ascot to dinner, but was (hopefully) forgiven. The day included a visit to the Frist Art Museum followed by lunch at Jack's Barbecue. Saturday night was our annual Awards Dinner, where we honored our volunteers with the Smoky Award, the Angel Award, and the Dugmore Rescuer of the Year Award. I took my now-customary crazily early (6am!) flight back home on Sunday morning, energized by the wonderful, dedicated spirit of this amazing organization.

I think it is important to recognize how much work our President, MaryElizabeth Dugmore, puts into this event and arranges every detail so that we can have this special time together. MaryElizabeth sets up the room block at the hotel, buys, delivers and arranges the food and drink for our hospitality suite, identifies a caterer for dinner Friday night, and plans our awards dinner. She does all of this work in the background, never complaining, never letting you see her sweat. MaryElizabeth, or ME, is a force of nature. The founder of this organization. The heartbeat. The pair of hands working hard to ensure that we continue to thrive and do our work as a beacon of light in a world that contains sadness, sorrow, neglect and abuse. We are part of the solution. Thank you, MaryElizabeth. I am not sure how you do it all, but thank you. I am sitting here looking a Nicholas and Leiko, who are chilling out on the floor next to me as I write this. Were it not for you, and for YTNR, I would not have these beautiful dogs as my family. What a precious gift.

This weekend is always a special time for me. Until next year.

VITO
By Rebecca Tortorice
In November 2013 a two-year-old male Yorkshire Terrier was found wandering the streets of Ventura, California, filthy, painfully injured, and frightened. There were abscesses from puncture wounds in his head, and his jawbone was broken so severely that the bone actually moved back and forth at the break.

 Sonny Snead  1st Runner Up

SONNY SNEED - by Amanda Sneed
In 2012, I adopted my first dog from the organization and fell head over heels in love. In time, I wanted to give back and provide a safe, comfortable and loving home for a foster dog while his forever home was being prepared. I had doubts about if and how I would be able to do it without getting attached but I remained firm that as long as I knew the dog would be going to a great forever home that my purpose would be served.

~ An old country farmer was taking his nephew who has five degrees camping for the first time. In the middle of the night the farmer said to the nephew "look up what do u see?", the nephew said "I see millions of stars", he said "I know that what that tell u", he said "astronomically that tells me there are million galaxies, metrologically that tells me it is gonna be a beautiful day, theologically that tells me God is a great creator", then the nephew asks the farmer "what that tells u" the farmer said "that tells me somebody stole our tent."  ~
