As I was leaving for a meeting this evening, I had a recollection that it was at approximately this time last year that I took the Gedro boyz on a road trip to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. I love the northwest Florida beaches, and have been going down there every August for the past several years. Overcome by a wave of sadness, I said goodbye to Leaky and Nick as I headed out the door as I realized that someone was missing indeed. Last year was Buzzy's last summer. It was very curious that last year, he demonstrated a palpable enthusiasm for our beach walks. All four of us. Buzzy never liked the beach. He preferred to stay in the air-conditioned condo. But last year, he hiked along with us, even enjoying the sand. It was almost prescient, as if he knew that was our last vacation together and so he wanted to enjoy it in its entirety. Although I have been able to intellectualize my grief over losing him-after all, he was almost 16 years old-his death has left a vacancy in my house that no dog will ever fill. That is the cycle of life that is what we sign up for when we fall in love with an animal. Buzzy was not my soul mate, or my heart. Buzzy was an independent, quirky, often-aloof character. And I will miss him forever. And he was one of a kind. I am confident that you can relate to the feelings I am having. It is so very mixed, and it has to be that way.
This past Fourth of July, we spend the weekend on Shelter Island. Leaky is a diehard beach bum. He loves the beach, and he went right into the water (note: he was on his leash the entire time). Leaky comes close to being legendary in the Gedro household, in the tradition of a long line of Yorkie characters. That is also the way it is.
Life is regenerative. It is renewable. Love shows up again and again.
Wishing you a safe, joyful, sunny (whether literally or figuratively, perhaps both) August.
Julie, Nick and Leaky

Remembering Bob by Cathy Grimes
|
Yorkies are very bright and even when rascally, seem to love to make their people laugh. My recently departed Bob, would have achieved world domination for a treat if he'd had opposable thumbs. Or at least that is what our vet said. :) It's been six months since he died and for some reason three different friends mentioned Bob to me yesterday citing how much they loved his ridiculous sense of entitlement, extreme attitude, hilarious bossiness and his strong desire to be the life of the party. When he wanted to be picked up, he would stare at you, bark and then back up. A running joke at all our parties was the saying, "Back it up, Bob!" All agreed that he was 200 lbs of dog crammed into a 5 lb body. Naturally all these stories made me cry. Does anyone on this list know when you will finally stop crying from missing the babies we've lost? Thanks Julie. Bob lived with no regrets and no remorse, ever! Beginning in 2003, I had three dogs of wildly varying sizes (55 lbs, 15 lbs and 5 lbs.) For some reason, whenever a dog had an "accident" it was always in my dining room, which was the furthest room from most activities in the house. Obviously by the size of the "accident", it was usually a snap to ascertain the culprit by a visual inspection of the evidence. But body language was enough for at least two of the culprits. For whatever reason (probably the juvenile sense of humor shared by my son and I) once a discovery was made, the script played out as follows: Me, in loud scary accusatory voice: "Who pooped? Does anyone know who pooped in the dining room?" Beau the Standard Poodle: If the culprit, he would come to the top of the stairs, hang his head and look really really guilty. Sugar the Llasa Poo would venture to the bottom of the steps and look really really sad. Sugar: If she was the culprit, would hide in the furthest bathroom at the top of the stairs which was the greatest distance from the act. If she could have cried tears of guilt, she would have. Beau would venture to the bottom of the stairs and hope I knew it wasn't his. He looked a little sorry even if it wasn't his. Bob: Regardless of innocence or guilt, he would come flying into the dining room, sniff the poop, strut around and basically conveyed the attitude of "Poop, who cares about a little poop?" If it was definitely his, he still acted like he had no idea how it got there. Made us laugh every single time..................which is why I miss him so badly. He made me laugh out loud at least 10 times a day ON AN AVERAGE DAY! As a puppy mill reject, that dog probably cost me over $20,000 in vet bills over the 11 years, 3 months and 4 days of our life together, not counting routine exams. Over the years, my husband and I came up with this formula when it came to Bob and his vet bills: If you value a laugh at a dollar per laugh, we owed Bob money. It's amazing how quiet it is in the house without him and how many less laugh lines I have around my eyes and mouth.....and how we would still be gladly paying those bills if we could just have him back. Naughty Bob!

Happy Endings...

My mother has an old dog named Lucky. She rescued him from the shelter. The family said they had to "downsize" on pets and because he was the oldest (and a loyal member of their family...so sad) he was picked to be rid of. He walks real slow and his eyesight isn't so good. I think this pic is the cutest display of his love for my mom, he spends the majority of his day in this position on the arm of the couch because he can see directly out the window and look for her and her car.

Neeko's Joke ;o)
|
~ A man went to a restaurant and ordered a steak with baked potato. About halfway through dinner he called the waitress over and said: "Madam, this potato is bad." She nodded, picked up the potato, and smacked it. Then she put it back on his plate and said: "Sir, if that potato causes any more trouble, you just let me know." ~
Love to all,
Neeko ♥
