Spotlight on Dee Thompson

1. Tell us about yourself. Where do you live? What are your hobbies? Tell us about your family.
I live in Lombard, Illinois with my husband, Jack. We have 8 grandchildren. We live in a modest home with our cat and several dogs we have adopted through YTNR. My hobbies are Kiwanis Club and making floral arrangements and wreaths. My other hobby is volunteering for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue.
2. How did you find YTNR and decide to volunteer?
I was shopping at Petsmart, walking down an isle and I heard a dog bark that sounded like a yorkie. I had to investigate who was behind that bark. When I got to the other isle I met Jerry Wolfe who told me the yorkie was a foster dog. He found his wife, Jackie, and introduced us. I asked some questions and asked about volunteering. I went online and filled out an application to volunteer. I got my first foster dog 3 months later and I haven't stopped since. That was 4 years ago.
3. Tell us about the dogs you adopted through YTNR?
My first one was Dolly, who was 11 years old at the time and is still with us. She is a purebred Yorkie who was probably used for breeding. Then came Scruffy, who is a Maltese/Yorkie mix. He was 5 years old then. Another Yorkie named Nicholas was next, and he was rescued at age 6 from a hoarder. He was very fearful but is doing much better now. My last one was a 4 year old long haired Chihuahua, Skye, who was surrendered by her owner to the county shelter. They placed her and she was given back because she has luxating patellas. The county called YTNR, we fostered her and we fell in love.
4. What do you love about Yorkies?
They are energetic, intelligent, and affectionate.
5. What do you love about YTNR?
I like working with other volunteers who share the same feelings that I have about animals. I enjoy fostering dogs and working with their challenging personalities. I love watching them grow into dogs that become adoptable.
6. What else should we know about you?
I am semi-retired and have the time to do something. I chose the two things I love the most; working with Kiwanis and helping children and working with YTNR and helping dogs.

Mary-Margaret's words of wisdom
|
Mom and I have been together for over eight years. We have a special relationship. Even my Grandpapa thinks so. He calls us "The Odd Couple". When folks have been together for a long time they get sort of complacent about things. Not only do they take each other for granted, but sometimes they even find ways to entertain themselves. Me? I find ways to yank my mom's chain.
I play "Hide & Seek". I blend nicely into the gazania plants on our hillside, and in the dusk of twilight I look just like a clump of plants. She calls me to come in for bed and I am enjoying my evening so I sit there, not moving a muscle, and I become invisible. Mom calls and calls for me and I'm like a garden statue. Then she gets her flashlight out (handy dandy high powered halogen small enough to fit on her keychain) and she starts scanning the backyard. The light glances off my tags and I'm busted. Rats. She comes over and scoops me up, muttering unkind words at me. Hey...it's just a game but she's not in the best humor after one of our games, especially when she loses.
Then there's the "Starving Little Waif" game. Mom gets herself something tasty, like maybe an English muffin spread with butter that's melted into all the nooks and crannies.. I come over to her and stare at the muffin. Boy that sure looks good, I say. She says "Want some?", and I come closer. She has this thing about people food not being good for pups but my power is greater than hers. She pulls a small piece of muffin off and hands it to me. "OK, here you go!", she says, and I come even closer. "Do you want it or not?", she asks a bit impatiently. Her arm is getting tired and she'd like to have another bite of her muffin before it gets cold. I come even closer, stick out my tongue, and take a little lick of the tiny pathetic little piece of muffin held out for me. Then I turn away and leave her there holding my piece of muffin, now covered in dog spit, and I walk away. It's not about the muffin, it's about winning.
"Catch Me if You Can" is another one. We get ready for work, our lunches are packed, and we'll just about make it on time. Mom grabs her purse, paperwork, and whatever else she needs, and comes to get me. I'm sitting on the landing of the staircase and she reaches for me. I move just out of touch and keep sitting. She reaches for me again, and I move again. I could do this all day. She unloads her purse, our lunches, and whatever else and comes for me. "You little Sh**head", she calls me. "Come here!", and I just laugh at her and move out of reach again. Finally, she tries to distract me, diving for me a couple of times without success and says "Fine...What EVER!". She picks up her stuff and takes it into the garage and loads up the car. She opens the garage door (I can hear it roll up) and starts the car. She's pretty mad at me but I know her well. By now, I'm sitting in the kitchen right by the door that goes into the garage. The countdown begins. "10-9-8-7-6-...." and the door swings open. I'm right there maybe 2 feet from the door and she bends over and picks me up. Don't know what all the fuss is about. I had fun. Us pups have to find our entertainment wherever we can.
And finally, here's me doing what I love best: Looking out my own personal window and saying "Hello" to everyone that passes, using my "indoor voice", of course. I'm not a big barker. I mostly say "Wurf wurf" . People and pups know me and wave at me. Neighborhood cats occasionally walk up to my window to say "Hi", too. I lean back on the potted plant basket, rest my elbow on the window sill and I can spend all day there.
Have a Happy April! See you next month.
Love, Mary-Margaret

Happy Endings...
|
Sometimes Happy Endings just keep on getting better and better.
Neeko and Aida are definitely living the dream.
Soooo, my Pawrents had a new kitchen sink installed yesterday big enough so my Mommy can bathe Bro Ray in it.
Nobody forewarned Meee that it will mean a group bath for the rest us called the Midgets.
Love and Smooches,

Neeko's Joke ;o)
|
~ Two dogs were walking along a road. One dog stopped and said, "My name is Fido. What's yours?"
The other dog thought for a minute, and then replied, "I think it's Down Boy." ~
Four years ago on April 3rd, the Easter Bunny brought Meee to my Pawrents :o)
Love to all,
Neeko ♥
