Editor's Message ~ Quality of Life....
|

Greetings from Houston, Texas, where I am engaged in the Academy of Human Resource Development 2014 Conference in the Americas. This is the second biggest event of my year. You know which event is first-the Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue Friends and Family Weekend of Fun!
But alas, I do have a "day job" and that day job does not directly involve Yorkies. My field is Human Resource Development, and I have been in the field for some 25 years now, first serving in various training and development roles in the finance, technology and telecommunications sectors in Atlanta, before making the big transition into the academy. I have always loved teaching and training, and I love that I get to make a living doing what feels very natural and comfortable.
But enough about me, I want to take the opportunity to offer the observation, as a Human Resource Development scholar and practitioner, about the marvelous training and educational materials that YTNR offers. We have websites, linked right off of the main YTNR page, devoted to providing information about Yorkie Encephalitis, Liver Shunt, Collapsing Trachea, Puppy Mills, and Legg Perthes. Each of these sties contains a wealth of information about these Yorkshire Terrier- specific issues. I find myself, true confessions, taking these rich resources for granted, until I am faced with a question from someone about one of these issues. I then point them to our website, and indicate that we have not only information, but we have community. Of course, within our community we have some of the country's (if not the world's) leading experts on this breed and in my experience, there is a generous spirit of information sharing and support that permeates the community.
As someone who has dedicated her life to training and education, I want to celebrate the treasure trove of resources that Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue offers to its community. It is truly extraordinary.

Yorkie Times Spotlight on Priscilla Chan
|
1. Tell us about yourself. Where do you live? Interests? Hobbies? Family?
I'm currently living in Anaheim, CA but will be relocating to Las Vegas in a few months. Aside from Yorkies, my hobbies and interests include sewing, costuming, collecting antiques and going on cruises. I am also a huge Johnny Depp and Tim Burton fan.
2. How did you become interested in Yorkies?
I actually grew up a cat person! I never had a dog until the bf had the great idea of buying a yorkie one day. We had absolutely no knowledge of Yorkies! It wasn't until after the fact that I started reading up on Yorkies and how they are high maintenance and notoriously hard to train. I took that as a challenge and am happy to say we succeeded. I especially like training and grooming my fosters.
3. How and when did you get involved in Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue?
I met a friend through YorkieTalk.com who is a volunteer with YTNR. After learning about puppy mills, puppy brokers, BYBers, and other animal abusers, I wanted to do my part to help these wonderful dogs. She told me about fostering and that was what I wanted to do to help.
4. Tell us about your Yorkies. What are their ages, names, hobbies?
My yorkie is named Uni. She is 7 years old. Her unique talents include playing basketball, knowing her right paw from her left paw, growling on command and other funny tricks. My current foster is Toto who is about 9 years old. He loves to play fetch and has the unique talent of holding two balls in his mouth at once.
5. What do you love about Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue?
I have met so many wonderful people that volunteer with YTNR that have such different hobbies and interests than me that I would otherwise never have become friends with if it had not been for YTNR. Also being able to be a part of placing these beautiful dogs with awesome families to help with the pet overpopulation problem.
6. What else would you like us to know?
I also love to cook and eat all different kinds of foods. My favorite cuisine is Japanese and Uni's name is Japanese for sea urchin.

Great News for Franklin
|
It looks like Franklin's procedure on his bum was a blessing in disguise. He has several stitches on the left side of his tail going in a diagonal direction toward his hip. The incision area must be uncomfortable because the past three days he has started to stand up on his back right leg for several seconds. I even saw him walk from his water dish, quite wobbly and uncertain, to his bed.
I did some research on his condition last night on line and found that nerves are very slow to heal. It could be that they are just now starting to make the connection between leg and brain. I have found some rehabilitation exercises I can use for him to build up his muscle in those back legs. It may take a lot of time, but the prospect of Franklin possibly walking on his own in the future is very exciting. Thank you to everyone who donated to help with Franklin's surgery. We truly couldn't do what we do without your help and support.

Neeko's Joke ;o)
|
~ Driving past the grounds of the university, a professor saw a student running hard. Snarling at his heels were three huge dogs. Intent on rescue, the professor braked his car to a halt and threw open the door. "Hurry - get in!!" he commanded. "Thanks for stopping," the bearded youth gasped, "most people won't offer me a lift when they see I have three dogs." ~
Love to all,
Neeko :o)
