Editor's Message ~ Second Chances....

Julie Gedro

This is what Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue is all about, after all. Second chances are gifts of grace. They are the opportunity for renewal, for rectification, for opportunities. We rescue and rehome Yorkies who are infirm, who are aged, who are abandoned, who are in circumstances that cry out for a second chance. And we are in the business of providing that second chance. Who does not appreciate the opportunity to be healed, and to be restored, from a situation that is difficult?

I am often asked: "How do you handle knowing that a foster situation is temporary?" "How can you rescue and adopt an older dog, knowing how brief their remaining years are likely to be?" My answer revolves around this theme: We are all temporary, and none of us knows how long our years are. The gift that Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue offers is the assurance that however long a Yorkshire's remaining days, weeks, months or years are, that they will be spent surrounded by the grace of the second chance. Second chances are nutritious, plentiful food and cool, clean water. Second chances are the whisper of "I love you, you are safe and secure here." Second chances are clean linens and bedding, and toys, and laughter. Second chances are the reciprocal, unmistakable, throb of gratitude that emanates from the adoptee to the adopter, and back again.

Each day, for all of us, is the day that we have. The day that we are granted. I know that the days ahead of me are less in number than those that have passed, and I chose to use my days as wisely as possible. In YTNR, even though I have a position of senior leadership, I continue to serve in a hands-on capacity. I am rescuing a Yorkie, in fact, this weekend. It is what I do. To use a colloquialism, it's how we Gedros roll. '

This month's column is dedicated to all of you who have given someone a second chance. It is a precious gift, is it not?

Yorkie Times Spotlight on Charlotte Potts (Charlie)

1.  Tell us about yourself.
  • Where do you live?  I live in Spring Valley, CA
  • Your interests?  I love to read good books
  • Hobbies?  I do genealogy to trace my ancestors and play on line games like FarmVille, read at least 2 books a week on my kindle.
  • Family?  I have 9 children, 5 that I gave birth to and 4 foster children that I adopted as infants when I was in my late 50's so I have children younger than my grand kids. My children are Jack 53 yrs, Jeff 52 yrs, Linda 51 yrs, Electra 46 yrs, Rene 44 yrs, most of who live in the east in New York state where I was born. My adopted children are Vanessa 29, Kevin 26 yrs, Raquel 24 yrs, Danielle 23 yrs. I have 18 grand children and 4 great grand children. I lost one of my grand children, Andrew 20 yrs to cancer last year, So sad!

2.  How did you become interested in Yorkies?  I became interested in yorkie rescue because I knew I couldn't afford to own one so I thought I could love them and care for them without having the vet bills that go with owning one. But then I fell in love with Odie who was supposed to be a vicious dog and he just wouldn't warm up to anyone who was interested in him so now I do have one.

3.  How and when did you become involved in YTNR?  I have been doing rescue for a couple of years.

4.  Tell us about your pets.  My only pet is Odie but my one adopted daughter Raquel lives with me and she owns 2 dogs, 3 cats, a horse some turtles and a chinchilla. Of course Mom gets to feed and care for all her pets except her horse Thunder. Raquel competed in equestrian horse shows until her horse Thunder got to be too old to compete.

  • What are their ages, names, fun stories.
We have Ebony who is a mid-sized dog of unknown breed, a rescue from our local shelter. Ebony is 13 yrs old but very very cute. Then we have Buddy, a poodle/Bichon mix, 3 yrs a rescue I bought for my daughter Danielle for her 18th birthday. Of course when she moved out of our home, she left him behind. He is also very cute. The three cats are Sadie a red patch tabby, a gift from our groomer to my daughter Raquel. Smokey 2 yr old blue Russian that my daughter Vanessa gave to Raquel because she could keep it in her apartment. Fat Pants 6 months old, another Blue Russian that was dropped off outside the Vets office where my daughter Raquel works along with three others that were too young to be away from their mother. Of course Raquel brought the two who survived home and carried them everywhere she went (college, work, wherever) in a small carrier so she could feed them every couple of hours. I guess she didn't trust me to do a good enough job feeding them. Smart Ass kid! Her friend took one of the kittens.  Then there is Cheerio, the 3 yr old chinchilla. Raquel got for her birthday from one of her equestrian trainers. I almost forgot the turtles. We have two red eared sliders, named Sean and Stephanie and a soft shelled turtle named Shelby that was given to my grand daughter Hannah, whose step-dad wouldn't let her keep. Sooooooo grannie gets to keep him. At this time I have two rescues for YTNR, Squirt who is about 8 yrs old and Daisy who is 10 yrs old.

5.  What do you love about Yorkie Rescue?  I love any organization that works for the betterment of people or animals. I enjoy being part of the organization and having the fun of taking care of the rescue dogs who give lots of love back to me for the care and love I give them. Beside, I had to quit adopting kids because kids are a whole lot more expensive than feeding a couple of furries at a time. While my bank account isn't big, my heart is.

6.  What else would you like us to know?  I am no different than any other ladies or gentlemen who foster rescues. I don't have lots of money but I do have endless love to share with these little furries.

Making Friends in the Work Place

I have a new friend on my floor. Her name is "Lady" and she's a baby Chihuahua, about 5 months old now. She's so full of energy that even when I stand perfectly still I get worn out watching her zip and zoom around me. Mom has tried to take a picture or two of us but all she gets is a big blur. Lady works at All State Insurance down the hall.

At first Lady and I were a little shy with each other. We've pretty much warmed up now. When I walk by her office door she runs up inside and says "Hello" to me and I say "Hello" back to her through the door. We use our indoor voices so the humans don't get all upset and say that we're unprofessional. A couple of weeks ago I took Lady some extra special treats that Armando at Natural Pet Foods gave me. Treats are meant for sharing and much more enjoyable that way.

Friday she came with her mom, Amber, down to my office. I think she wanted to have a play date. Her mom said she could stay at my place if we closed the office door but I really wanted to go to her place. They have all kinds of yummy things to nibble on in their kitchen. Amber took me and Lady back to their office and we had the most wonderful time. Even when we weren't doing anything remarkable, it was nice being in the company of one of my people - maybe not one of my clan from the Yorkshires, but close enough.

About 5:00 PM Amber and Lady left to go home and I raced like a shot back to my own office, flying through the door like a bat on fire and skidding to a stop just under Mom's desk. We left about 20 minutes later to go run errands and go to the market.

Like Barkra Streispaw sang:  "Puppies...Puppies who need Puppies...are the LUCKIEST Puppies in the World!" !!

Franklin Special Needs Looking for a Special Forever Home.....

Franklin is a special needs dog with a great attitude and inspiring story.
This Yorkie boy was found as a stray, dragging his back end with sores on his feet, hocks and bottom.  He appeared to have lived without the use of his rear legs for quite some time.  The shelter staff contacted YTNR because Franklin had such a good personality, they believed he was a good candidate for a second chance.

Franklin was examined and X rayed. It was discovered that this sweet little dog had been shot and has a BB lodged in his spinal cord. Surgery to remove the BB was ruled out and a custom made wheel cart was ordered. Franklin  has learned to use his wheel cart quickly. His abrasions have almost healed and he is ready to find his very own forever family.

His new family must be willing to devote time to Franklin's continued care. He will never be able to walk on his own. He can not be left alone in his cart without supervision.  Franklin must wear a Drag Bag when he isn't in his wheel cart to prevent the sores and abrasions from coming back.  Franklin also wears diapers since his ability to control his bowels and bladder have also been affected.  In return for this extra care, Franklin will reward you with unconditional love and a lifetime of good days and inspiration.

He is about 2 years old, weighs 11.6 pounds.  He is neutered, microchipped, heartworm and parasite tested as well as up to date on all his vaccinations.
If you are committed to being there for Franklin, day to day for the rest of his life, please fill out an adoption application on our web page www.YorkieRescue.com

Freddie with his forever Mommy, Candee

Thank you for helping me find my new little Yorkie.   I did change his name from Teddy to Freddie.  Freddie is such a smart dog that he picked up on it right away. He is great company for me and we have been having so much fun. He is just what I needed.  I love him and I can tell he loves me too!  ;)

Thanks again.

Neeko's Joke ;o)

~ It was Valentine's day and Jim and Danielle's first date. They sat in the darkened cinema waiting for the film to start. The screen finally lit up with a flashy advertisement for the cinema's concession stand. Jim and Danielle realized that there was no sound. The film began but the silence continued.
Suddenly, out of the darkness, an irritated voice in the crowd loudly shouted, "Okay, who's got the remote control?" ~
