Editor's Message - August 2013

Julie Gedro

It is, I am sure, a given that if you are reading this article and this newsletter, that you share my passion for animals and in particular for dogs (and in particular in particular, for Yorkshire Terriers). I would like to dedicate this month's Editor's Message, to the sacredness of the bond between dog and owner. There is nothing like it, as far as I am concerned. My boys and I are about as close as any relationship that I can imagine. Each one of them - and I speak not only for my current pack, but in members of the Gedro pack over the ages-has a distinct personality, disposition, and set of quirks and gifts. Buzzy has become the sage, the consummate alpha, the one from whom the others take direction. Nicholas is the most demonstrably affectionate, the one whose head seems to always find itself in perfect position for me to pet. Leaky is the clever, mischievous guy who seems to be a step ahead of me in many ways. As I reflect about the bonds that I have with mine, and I consider you, thinking about your own dogs as you read this article, I am filled with love and with joy and gratitude.

On June 24, this summer, my niece, Sarena Carroll, passed away. It has been a very difficult time in many ways, particularly (of course) for her mother, my sister Ellen. On June 29, a Saturday, we memorialized Sarena at Ellen and Randy's (my brother in law) home in Great Falls, Virginia from early afternoon into the night.  It was a lovely memorial, filled with pictures, people, and music.  As I sat out in the backyard, connecting with friends and relatives, I was struck by a griever. His sadness was all over his face, his breathing heavy as if he were exhausted from crying, and it was clear he was heartbroken. The "person" to whom I refer is not a person at all, but rather, a Retriever mix named Cody. Cody, an approximately 10 year old male, was Sarena's close companion. He was just as much a part of the memorial as I was, or as Ellen was, or as any other mourner was.

Cody's grief is as real as any grief there is. I know the grief in the direction of my losing one of my own Yorkies.  For the first time, I witnessed grief in the other direction-of a dog losing his human.  It broke my heart right down the middle.  I am certain that you understand.

Grief knows no species. It is common for us all.

Each day on this earth, for each of us, is a gift.  Each loving bond sacred.

Please enjoy this month's Newsletter.

Yay.  Mom finally made our plane reservations for Nashville.   I am so excited to see you all again.  We're flying Southwest out of Ontario to Nashville and back.   I'm starting to think about wardrobe now.   At least it's nothing formal so I don't have to worry about tripping over my gown like I did a couple of years ago.   Mini-skirts are fine with me, and even "au naturale" for the truly casual affairs.  I wouldn't mind swimming but humans are so picky about who they let swim in their pools, even though us Yorks and Yorkettes are probably cleaner and less apt to shed than most humans are.

My personal stylist, Miss Marilyn, has adopted a new baby.  He's four months old and he's a little Maltese boy.  She lost all three of her babies a short time ago.  One of them was my best friend Madison, a Yorkette, with that brain disease GME that so many pups get.  Madison really fought it and went into remission a couple of times but eventually she passed on.  It was so hard on Miss Marilyn and she said she'd never have another pup again.  We know how that goes, don't we?  Enter sweet little "Channing", named for Channing Tatum and the "Magic Mike" character he played.
Channing is a sweet heart and he already knows how to treat ladies.  The very first thing he did when he met me was to give me a kiss.  Then he turned his backside to me so I could sniff.  How polite is that, I ask you??  The boy has manners.  Then I skootched around so he could sniff, and from that point on we were the best of friends.  Isn't he the cutest ever?

I'm still loving my job, especially meeting new people every day.  That's the best part.   We get reviews occasionally on Google or Yelp, and one of our customers was kind enough to mention me.  He actually referred to me as "the lovely Mary-Margaret".  That boosted my ego a bit.  Other people come in and ask for me first.  It's my job to get them seated and feeling comfortable before they talk to my mom.   If they are particularly nervous or upset I let them give me belly rubs.  Talk about a "win-win" situation.

See you soon.   Love you all.....

Mmmmmwwwaaaaah!!

Happy Ending Update on Hobbs

Hobbs has been adopted! This lucky little boy gets to spend his nights AND days with his beautiful new mom. On the rare occasion she can't work from home and must go into the office, Hobbs is welcome to tag along too! It seems like Hobbs is destined to become quite the jetsetter in his new home. He's already planning his first trip out of the country to Montreal to visit his new extended family. What a life!
