Counseling
ATTENTION SENIORS!
**Honors Program--Sabino's Honors Program will be Wednesday evening May 15, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. All seniors will receive a request to submit their scholarship offers and award information to the Counseling Office for inclusion in the Honors Program. Any information that has not been submitted by Friday, May 3rd, will not be in the Honors Program. If you have questions regarding the Honors Program, contact Counselor Nena Semko at 584-7743.
**If you have not turned in your Free Application for Student Aid Form (FAFSA), do so right away. You must have a FAFSA Form on file to receive either need based or non-need based scholarships for college.
**If you haven't been blessed with an early decision from your favorite school, don't panic. Others are still accepting applications, so it's not too late to expand your possibilities. Call your schools to make sure that all application materials have been received. Don't ignore your grades. Remember that all college acceptances are contingent on the successful completion of your senior year. Colleges have been known to rescind acceptances based on poor academic achievement due to senioritis. Prepare for AP exams.
COLLEGE BOUND GRADUATING SENIORS
You must send a FINAL TRANSCRIPT to the college/university you have decided to attend next fall. Request Forms are in the Attendance/Registrar's Office. DON'T WAIT - DO IT NOW. Transcripts will be sent after final grades are posted in May.
REPEATING A CLASS
When a student does not perform well in a class it is possible, and in some circumstances required, for a student to repeat that class. If a required class is failed, then the class must be taken again in order for the student to graduate. If you failed a math, English, or World Language class, you must repeat that class before you can move on to the next higher level. If you did poorly in a class which provides fundamentals that are necessary for subsequent courses (like math, World Language or English) then it is advisable to retake that class in order to be prepared for future classes. Some students retake classes in order to improve their grade point average. Classes can be repeated during summer school and/or online. When a course is repeated the initial grade will still appear on the student's transcript, but will not be used in the computation of the GPA. If credit was earned the first time the course was taken, no additional credit will be awarded. All classes taken off campus must be pre-approved by your student's counselor.
DOUBLE CHECK YOUR TRANSCRIPT
The registrar and counselors are continually checking student transcripts for mistakes. Students and parents need to help in determining if the transcripts are correct and whether a student has enough credits to graduate. Students received copies of their transcripts earlier this semester to use in selecting courses for next year. Contact the Counseling Office if you have any transcript questions.

JUNIORS
All College Bound Juniors should take an SAT or ACT Test before this next school year. Having a score on file will allow students to apply early for college admission and scholarships.
Juniors will be taking the ACT at Sabino on April 23rd. There is no cost for this test; the results are official and can be used for college admissions and scholarships. If the college and/or university you are applying to require the writing portion of the ACT, you will need to register for another date to take the ACT again. You will not take the writing portion of the ACT on April 23rd. This is a great opportunity to get experience with the test!
All juniors who are planning on participating in sports at an NCAA Division I or II school need to register with the eligibility center. Go to http://www.eligibilitycenter.org. Juniors who are planning on participating in sports at an NAIA school need to register at http://www.playnaia.org.

VISITING COLLEGES
Are you traveling this summer? Why not include some college visits?
While internet research and talking with college representatives can give a student a lot of information about a college, spending time on a college campus is the best way for a student to determine if that is where they want to call home for the next 4 years. Visiting a college gives a student the opportunity to tour the campus, talk to students, eat in the dining hall, find out about opportunities for getting involved, and possibly even sit in on a class. Being on the campus also can spark some questions or discussion points a student (or parent) may not have thought of otherwise.
If you plan to visit a college, call ahead to make arrangements for a tour. A tour is the best way to get a good overview of the campus. They can fill up fast, so plan ahead. In addition to the tour, you will want to walk around some on your own. Don't be afraid to talk to students. Most are happy to share their honest opinions of the school and campus life.
When you call to schedule your tour, you can also inquire about opportunities to meet with an advisor or professor in the area of your intended major. Many colleges also have a list of local hotels that will give visiting families a discount.
VIRTUAL TOURS
Students considering attending an out-of-state school should try to arrange to visit those campuses, as well. If that is not possible or to just get a look around a school, students can participate in virtual tours online through CampusTours.Com or CollegeWeekLive.com. Students canalso look on the website of the schools on their "interest list" and check out the videos and virtual tours most have on their websites.
WEBSITES FOR TRACKING DOWN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
Deciding what college or university to attend can be an agonizing process for many families. While the ultimate decision lies with the student, there are some powerful search tools available online to help track down some possible good-fit schools. These are not just for 4-year colleges and universities. You can also search for schools that offer associates degrees and certificate programs.
