SABERCAT PRIDE

                                                Educating to Excel                               April 2013
b&w doublesabercat

Dear Parents and Community,

This will be my final contribution to the Sabercat Pride as your Principal.  As most of you have heard by now, I am retiring at the end of my contract this year (6/30/13), and at the April 9 Governing Board meeting, my successor - Matthew Munger - was announced.  I am very pleased that the young man who I mentored for six years as one of my Assistant Principals will return as your new Principal SY 2013-14.

As is the case with our spring issue, many things I am sharing with you have already occurred and others will occur around the time this issue of the Sabercat Pride is published online.  We had a phenomenal Dance Show (April 4 & 5); we have administered AIMS Math and Science (April 9 & 10); the Stanford 10 exam and our Talent Show were held (April 11); and Prom is April 20.  Of course this will be my last Sabino Prom, so let me thank you in advance for the pleasure it is to supervise the most well-behaved students in Tucson!  Before we know it, our students will be taking their final exams and our seniors will be counting the final days to graduation on May 23.

Should you have a student who finds themself in the unfortunate circumstance of failing one or more classes in the coming weeks, please be advised that TUSD is only offering Summer School at the following high schools: Pueblo, Palo Verde, Cholla, Tucson High and Santa Rita.  The Summer School classes at Santa Rita will (all) be delivered online via PLATO.  Please call the Sabino Counseling Offices for further details on how your student(s) can be served this summer.

In closing, it is too early to say goodbye; rather I would like to take this opportunity to tell each and every stakeholder: students, teachers, other staff, parents, and community that you have made my fourteen years at Sabino the very best of my life and my career.  Though I will not be with you physically next year, you can be sure that I will remain in touch.

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU all for the myriad of ways that you make Sabino High School the, "Diamond in TUSD's Crown."

Sincerely,

sabinoS

ATTENTION SENIORS!

**Honors Program--Sabino's Honors Program will be Wednesday evening May 15, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.  All seniors will receive a request to submit their scholarship offers and award information to the Counseling Office for inclusion in the Honors Program. Any information that has not been submitted by Friday, May 3rd, will not be in the Honors Program. If you have questions regarding the Honors Program, contact Counselor Nena Semko at 584-7743.

**If you have not turned in your Free Application for Student Aid Form (FAFSA), do so right away. You must have a FAFSA Form on file to receive either need based or non-need based scholarships for college.

**If you haven't been blessed with an early decision from your favorite school, don't panic. Others are still accepting applications, so it's not too late to expand your possibilities. Call your schools to make sure that all application materials have been received. Don't ignore your grades.  Remember that all college acceptances are contingent on the successful completion of your senior year. Colleges have been known to rescind acceptances based on poor academic achievement due to senioritis.  Prepare for AP exams.

COLLEGE BOUND GRADUATING SENIORS

You must send a FINAL TRANSCRIPT to the college/university you have decided to attend next fall.  Request Forms are in the Attendance/Registrar's Office.  DON'T WAIT - DO IT NOW.  Transcripts will be sent after final grades are posted in May.

REPEATING A CLASS

When a student does not perform well in a class it is possible, and in some circumstances required, for a student to repeat that class. If a required class is failed, then the class must be taken again in order for the student to graduate.  If you failed a math, English, or World Language class, you must repeat that class before you can move on to the next higher level.  If you did poorly in a class which provides fundamentals that are necessary for subsequent courses (like math, World Language or English) then it is advisable to retake that class in order to be prepared for future classes. Some students retake classes in order to improve their grade point average. Classes can be repeated during summer school and/or online. When a course is repeated the initial grade will still appear on the student's transcript, but will not be used in the computation of the GPA.  If credit was earned the first time the course was taken, no additional credit will be awarded.  All classes taken off campus must be pre-approved by your student's counselor.

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR TRANSCRIPT

The registrar and counselors are continually checking student transcripts for mistakes. Students and parents need to help in determining if the transcripts are correct and whether a student has enough credits to graduate.  Students received copies of their transcripts earlier this semester to use in selecting courses for next year. Contact the Counseling Office if you have any transcript questions.

JUNIORS

All College Bound Juniors should take an SAT or ACT Test before this next school year. Having a score on file will allow students to apply early for college admission and scholarships.

Juniors will be taking the ACT at Sabino on April 23rd.  There is no cost for this test; the results are official and can be used for college admissions and scholarships.  If the college and/or university you are applying to require the writing portion of the ACT, you will need to register for another date to take the ACT again.  You will not take the writing portion of the ACT on April 23rd.  This is a great opportunity to get experience with the test!

All juniors who are planning on participating in sports at an NCAA Division I or II school need to register with the eligibility center.  Go to http://www.eligibilitycenter.org.  Juniors who are planning on participating in sports at an NAIA school need to register at http://www.playnaia.org.

TUSD PARENTAL ACCESS MESSAGE BOARD

Teachers post grades and update weekly.  Parents can also view credits that have been earned. This information can be found on the left side under "Individual Student Stats HS Credits." VISITING COLLEGES

Are you traveling this summer?  Why not include some college visits?

While internet research and talking with college representatives can give a student a lot of information about a college, spending time on a college campus is the best way for a student to determine if that is where they want to call home for the next 4 years.  Visiting a college gives a student the opportunity to tour the campus, talk to students, eat in the dining hall, find out about opportunities for getting involved, and possibly even sit in on a class.  Being on the campus also can spark some questions or discussion points a student (or parent) may not have thought of otherwise.

If you plan to visit a college, call ahead to make arrangements for a tour.  A tour is the best way to get a good overview of the campus.  They can fill up fast, so plan ahead.  In addition to the tour, you will want to walk around some on your own.  Don't be afraid to talk to students.  Most are happy to share their honest opinions of the school and campus life.

When you call to schedule your tour, you can also inquire about opportunities to meet with an advisor or professor in the area of your intended major.  Many colleges also have a list of local hotels that will give visiting families a discount.

VIRTUAL TOURS

Students considering attending an out-of-state school should try to arrange to visit those campuses, as well.  If that is not possible or to just get a look around a school, students can participate in virtual tours online through CampusTours.Com or CollegeWeekLive.com.  Students canalso look on the website of the schools on their "interest list" and check out the videos and virtual tours most have on their websites.

WEBSITES FOR TRACKING DOWN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

Deciding what college or university to attend can be an agonizing process for many families.  While the ultimate decision lies with the student, there are some powerful search tools available online to help track down some possible good-fit schools.  These are not just for 4-year colleges and universities.  You can also search for schools that offer associates degrees and certificate programs.

The Math Department Thinks Globally and Acts Locally

Some of our students had the opportunity this year to research ways to decrease Sabino energy costs will at the same time reducing the school's carbon footprint.  May students expressed surprise and dismay at how much electricity and water the school used in a year.

This was the start of a year-long project to explore increasing efficiencies at Sabino by some of it's brightest students.  Their project culminated with presentations to TUSD Operations officals.  James Burns, TUSD Operations Business Office Coordinator, and Marcus Jones, TUSD Bonds and Architecture, came out to not only watch the students present their ideas but provided  feedback and shared which ideas TUSD Operations had already looked into, what they had discovered and which of the student ideas sounded like ones the district should follow up on.  Rather than just "presentations" this experience was more like a conference of collegial sharing.  Marcus Jones said, "I really enjoyed the presentations from your students.  It is such a treat to have the opportunity to link our day to day activity to students. If it is possible, could you share the presentations that the students developed.  I want to discuss some of their ideas with the Bond Fiscal Oversight Committee."  Congratulations to Sabino Math students, their hard work is paying off in real ways!

Mrs. Carpenter's Biology classes had a fabulous time fishing at Lakeside Park. Once again the Arizona Game and Fish Department sent Joe Fagan and Mary Welsh to teach the students about fish, fishing and ecology. They also brought all the fishing poles, tackle and bait for the students to use. It was a beautiful day and many fish were caught.

Lacey DeChant caught the only catfish of the day. Kali Coubrough, Kyle Gamble, and Emma Petersen caught rainbow trout. Emma also caught a red-eared slider turtle which was promptly released. Kendrick Petty, Nolan Richards and Connor Slama managed to snag freshwater clams. Dominique Bradshaw, Dallas Kleese, Brandon Probasco, Colton Quinn, Laura Zieman,  and Nick Avram caught sunfish. Dalton Partridge caught two huge goldfish and the bus driver caught one goldfish. Will Roads and Carlie Jones caught sticks. Cameron Carver caught a sign. Mr. Fagan dissected two of the fish for the students to see the internal organs and their functions. It was an educational and fun day. A special thanks to the adult chaperones that made it possible: Aubry Wilkes, Mark Weigel, Andrew Petersen, Travis Miller and Guy Dobbins.

News from the Health Office - Sunscreen Available!

The sun is out, temperatures are rising and spring activities and sports are underway. Don't forget to apply sunscreen before going outside.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. It is estimated that over three million new cases are diagnosed each year - more than all other cancers combined. Arizona has some of the highest skin cancer rates in the world.

Follow the ACE plan to save your skin from the harmful effects of the sun!

  • A - Avoid UV rays - Sun damage to the body is caused by invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When possible seek shade! Sun protection products contain ingredients that absorb into your skin to provide sun protection within the skin layers and that help protect your skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number on the product label tells you how long the product will protect your skin from burning. Use a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher.
  • C - Cover-Up - Use sunglasses and wear hats to extracurricular activities. If possible wear long sleeves or pants.
  • E - Examine your skin - Look at your skin for new or changing spots, bumps, or moles. If you find something suspicious, see your healthcare provider as soon as possible. If you find skin cancer early it is usually treatable.

The Sabino Health Office now has a sunscreen dispenser that dispenses SPF 30 sunscreen. If your child forgets sunscreen at home please tell him/her to stop by to apply! If your child is allergic to any ingredients in sunscreen please inform the health office.

Bruce Williams,Sabino High School 'Learning Support Coordinator' has gone 'above & beyond with all students. He gives guidance in achieving their high school years. His kindness and compassion are seen in everyday practices of making himself available for tutoring before and during lunch. He brings the best in all students. It is easily seen that his priority is our students. He is respected and well liked by our  students. This is why I believe 'Coach Williams deserves to be recognized!

      ______________________________________________________________________

I wish to nominate 3 individuals for Sabino's PTSA Excellence Award. Joe Abney, the Health/PE/coach here at Sabino was quite ill last summer. He was hospitalized, had major surgery, rehabilitation, recovery and was released from the hospital just before the holidays in December. He spent almost 6 months in the hospital, both in Tucson and Phoenix, with the majority of the time in the Phoenix area.

Bruce Williams, the Learning Support Coordinator, was the "go-to" guy for information about Joe. He was at the hospital in town daily and visited Joe weekly in the Phoenix area. He always had information on Joe and how he was doing. Bruce spent Sundays in Phoenix watching football with his friend and had reports and messages for those of us unable to travel to Phoenix to visit Joe.

Doug and Janet Holland, parents of Lee Holland and a football coach, have had Joe living at their home since his release from the hospital. They have been instrumental in helping Joe transition and adjust through his recovery and rehabilitation.

This extraordinary effort of BruceDoug and Janet exemplifies and the true meaning of a friend being like a family member. These individuals have contributed their time and energy with helping a beloved faculty member through a life threatening illness and recovery! Pure excellence!
