FAFSA INFORMATION
In January seniors and their families can begin filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is only available on-line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov unless you specifically request a paper application by calling 1-800-433-3243. The FAFSA must be received by the colleges to qualify for need-based and MANY non-need-based scholarships. FAFSA forms need to be filed by February 14th to reach the state schools by their priority filing date, March 1st.
In order to file the FAFSA both the student and parent will need to have a PIN number for their electronic signatures. You may apply for the PIN numbers at http://www.pin.ed.gov.
The FAFSA deadline for the state universities is March 1st. Students who are planning on attending an out-of-state or private university, they will need to check with the individual school for their deadline. If you will not have your exact tax information by the deadlines, then estimate what it will be using previous tax information, file that information, and amend it later, if necessary. The important point is to get the FAFSA in early.
All students should file a FAFSA! Even if you think (or know) your family won't qualify for federal aid, it is important to note that many colleges use information from the FAFSA in awarding their own scholarships.
SAT & ACT
All college-bound Juniors should take an SAT or ACT Test by June, 2013. Having a score on file will allow students to apply early for college admission and scholarships All Juniors will be taking an official ACT (without the writing portion) at Sabino free of charge on April 23, 2013.

SCHOLARSHIP SCAMS
This is the time of year when the scholarship "scams" push the hardest for new customers. Be aware of offers that sound too good to be true. In general you can obtain the same results on your own. There are ways to increase financial aid eligibility in some instances, but you need not pay for them. Here are the most important:
1. Savings and other funds should be in parents' (not student's) names. 2. Equity in a family home will not be "counted against you" as will be other assets. 3. Funds in annuities are exempt (in some instances) in the need calculation.
4. Avoid any organization inviting you to a free informational meeting, telling you that you have been "specially selected" or charging you to find or apply for scholarships.
