Here are a few steps that you can consider when having to terminate an employee.
Terminations are most effective when:
  • Transparency exist related to termination policies.
  • Documentation is in order and shows a pattern of inadequate performance/behaviors
  • Documentation should include those actions that are clearly observable
  • Consider if there are any risks related to the termination
  • Make the decisions in a collaborative manner to ensure all angles are considered, certainly check with an HR professional to guide the process
  • Prepare paperwork related to terminating employees to include last pay, benefit continuation, checklist related to company property etc
  • Employee manager should lead termination, the one who knows the situation best; be brief and to the point;
  • Schedule an exit interview, best with HR professional trained to ask the questions that result in the most clear and useful feedback
  • Be sure electronic access is disconnected
  • Provide time to clear out office personal belongings outside of work hours
  • All should be treated with dignity and respect
