Common sense isn't common so it often seems. Especially when it comes to drastic changes to business requirements and labor laws.  Business owners and employees have expressed their concerns that are likely to occur with the dramatic increase for exempt status employees.  Cuts and demotions are inevitable and as I see when addressing this with clients, some workers will end up making less.

The current changes that are being considered would set the initial increase for December to $35,984 and then move to a three year phase in process to meet the DOL's threshold.  This would eliminate the automatic three year increase.

We will have to stay focused on the success of these proposed changes. In the meantime, keep moving ahead knowing that change is inevitable. Take the time you need to update job descriptions, review compensation, market and internal equity and seek professional support to guide you through this process.  There are creative ways of handling these changes to minimize the drastic impact expected.
