Too often we promote our professionals more because of their strong skills in their current role rather than truly assessing their leadership skills and/or abilities to develop.  Many clients are now seeing the value of offering "Leadership Coaching" once a promotion takes place or better yet, prior to the promotion taking place.  There are significant benefits to doing so at this early phase of their new supervisory/leadership role.  Employees are more confident moving into the role along with the improved skill set that will allow them to be immediately effective in the new role.

Benefits of Early Leadership Coaching
A common organization "error" in promoting staff is that there is very little focus in the line of preparation and/or training for leadership or supervising staff.  This is particularly difficult for those that are moved into a position of overseeing those individuals who were previously their peers.  Hitting the ground running with well developed skills through the support and training of a coach is invaluable.

One of the biggest and most costly errors made in organizations is moving someone from professional to leader without careful attention to their natural skills and abilities.  Further, this is an entirely new role.  Their previous technical skills utilized are now replaced with a new set of functions that require an entirely different set of "technical skills".  Training in the form of coaching is the best answer to capitalizing on the individual's innate strengths and focusing on those areas that need development.  The transition into a role of leadership does not come overnight.  There should be a methodical approach taken as organizations are considering promoting professionals.

Most coaching occurs when organization leaders find deficiencies in leadership styles once a person has been in the position for a while.  Such leadership challenges are expensive to any organization in the form of turnover, morale issues, performance deficiencies and overall quality of services provided.  The cost of a coach is essentially insignificant compared to the "cost" of deficient leadership skills!
A large part of the professional services I offer is focused on developing strong leaders.  Building an organization's capacity cannot work successfully without building strong leaders.  Be careful not to consider hard-workers as good leaders.  Working hard does not necessarily equate to "working smart".

We all have room to develop and grow! Too often we have "blind spots" to our own style that require objective review to optimize our own performance. Take the time to learn more about how your style and/or your leadership staff could improve in effectiveness through professional development of this type.  Personalized "training" (coaching) of this nature is effective because it is "relevant" to the specific needs of individuals. Through coaching, there are very specific skills and approaches identified that will lead not only to improved leadership but improved relationships overall!
