According to Gallup research, 82% of companies fail to hire the 'right" talent for manager positions.  This is the beginning of the difficulties that result.  Ineffective managers create ineffective staff, or at the very least, unhappy, unengaged staff.  Morale and performance suffers.

Hiring Managers...common errors

Many business leaders tend to hire the "super workers" as supervisors/leaders.  Having a high competency level at what you do, doesn't make you a strong potential candidate for leadership.  Some companies hire based on tenure, sort of serving as a "reward" for loyalty.  These common errors need to be addressed if you are seeking higher performing teams.  So many are "doing more with less", manager effectiveness becomes a much bigger need.

How do you assess leadership skills?
There are highly effective leadership skill assessments. Consider this as the initial part of your screening process.  While an assessment alone isn't what is being recommended, such assessments provide a great "snapshot" of the individual's innate strengths and behavior tendencies.  Such information provides management the ability to clearly understand the areas that mentoring would be helpful and ensure such training and support is provided to optimize leadership effectiveness.  Take the time to increase leadership effectiveness!
