A FEW Tips for an Effective Employee Evaluation Process
1. Such evaluations should be at least once a year..scheduled without interference with this time one on one
2. Such evaluation criteria should include the performance throughout the period of time for which you are evaluating
3. Keep a folder on each employee and throughout the year, drop quick notes in the file to trigger you to include the particular item at time of review
4. Keep track of both exceptional performance and areas of challenge...keeping specifics in order to provide detail on the evaluation
5. Issues that come up throughout the year that require immediate attention MUST be handled "immediately"..don't wait until the time of the evaluation to "blind side" the employee...however, make sure the issue is covered in the formal evaluation as a review of the year's performance and all issues related
6. Be consistent, honest, direct, thorough, objective and fair
7. Be sure to include expectations for the following review period..include any mentoring, formal training etc that will enhance the individual's performance
8. Avoid some common errors....being too general, rating performance "average" for each performance indicator, avoid being too harsh or too complimentary on every performance indicator; avoid focusing too much on the most recent or extraordinary incident and generalizing for all performance behaviors
