What is your New Year's Resolution? The New Year is a fantastic time to reflect on 2013 and decide what to improve in 2014. This month's reading selection will help you to get going and stay focused. The video shares the best times to take the SAT and ACT (when you can get your exact exam back!). There are many conferences to mark the New Year and I will be speaking on Long Island, in New Jersey and in the Bronx. Inspiring engagement and learning with classroom management tools and using variety is the blog post topic to help teachers, parents and students to stay on track during Math class! |
Read This Book!
Perhaps the title would be more alluring if it was "Live Fully" but author Todd Henry Founder of the Accidental Creative wants to wake us up. He specializes in "helping organizations generate brilliant ideas." But he sells himself short because the strategies that "unleash your best work every day" are applicable to everyone including students of any age. Outstanding suggestions: be fiercely curious to combat boredom and cultivate creativity, find people you want to emulate, create checkpoints during the day/week to see how you are doing and step out of your comfort zone.

When to Take the SAT and ACT
The SAT and ACT both have opportunities to get your exact exam back which helps to troubleshoot and improve your score and knowledge and skills! For less than $20, you can get your SAT exam along with your answers and the correct answers. This is only possible for the SAT test dates during the months of January, May and October using The SAT Question and Answer Service. The ACT has the Test Information Release and is offered in April, June and December. These services are how I chose the dates for the SAT (October 2009) and ACT (June 2012).

The Math Classroom Toolkit Blog Post of the Month
I often wish there was a Math Classroom Toolkit with teaching and classroom management tools for keeping students engaged and learning in my 75 minute Precalculus sessions. Variety is the spice of life so here are some ideas:
- Breaking the session into smaller pieces by using a timer
- Using technology and then going low tech
- Allowing calculator usage vs. no calculators
- Employing voting systems like remote clickers or if cell phones are allowed www.polleverywhere.com (this worked well for one section but the other section posted up inappropriate comments that displayed in real time on the screen in front of the classroom -- yikes!)
- Independent work (including exit slips/tickets, checkpoints and quizzes) and group work with groups they choose or groups you choose
More ideas can be found here or send an email to share your ideas.
