Quote of the Month

"The common language of business is not going to be Chinese or Spanish.

It's going to be math."

--Michael Rhodin, senior vice president at IBM,

Decimals in 5th grade?  Slope in 8th grade? To unify Math education, the Common Core Standards will be implemented in the 2014 - 2015 school year.  Sample tasks released by New York and New Jersey will help ease the transition for teachers, students and parents.  This month's Recommended Viewing is "The Biggest Story Problem" produced by a former Math teacher with ideas on how to improve Math education.  Designing 2013 is packed with goal setting tips and ideas to close out 2012 with energy and enthusiasm.

"One subject may determine their fate -- 3/4 of U.S. students are not proficient in Math." Former Math teacher Scott Laidlaw along with Jennifer Lightwood created this film to create a conversation about American Math education and to promote their Math based learning game Ko's Journey.  Finnish and American education are contrasted and educators Marilyn Burns and Keith Devlin (NPR's The Math Guy) contribute their ideas for better Math education for America's future.

"The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy"www.corestandards.org
Common Core has been adopted by 46 states and the goal is to have Common Core aligned tests in place for 2014-2015.  Some states have released sample tasks and pacing calendars.  If you know of other states that have posted tasks, please update the Google Docs or send an email to Robin.

Designing 2013

As New Year's approaches, it is a fine time to reflect on 2012 and to  brainstorm about 2013.  What have you achieved during the past year?  What are some things that did not work out?  Take time to think and write about 2012 and look ahead to your goals and dreams for 2013 whether school, work, fitness, finance, or relationships.

Brain Teaser
Numbers thru Funnel

Paula and Georgia play a game with dice that have colors instead of numbers.  Some faces are pink and some are green.  Paula wins when the two top faces are the same color.  Georgia wins when the colors are different. Their chances are even.
The first die has 5 pink faces and 1 green face. On the second die, how many faces are pink and how many are green?
