Note: employment data refers to payroll job estimates for the city of Chicago and is not adjusted for seasonality. Key trends evident this month include: The Chicago (city) economy has expanded by an estimated 7,476 jobs since April 2013, mostly attributed to education and health services (+5,768), professional and business services (+3,984) and transportation and utilities (+1,444) sectors. Online job postings offer insight into the Illinois and Chicago labor marketsby Illinois Innovation Index
May 28

Last year, approximately one in every six external hires in the United States was attributed to an online job board.
1 According to the Brookings Institution, the density of job postings on the Internet in 2012 reached 70 percent or more of all vacancies in the economy-and a staggering 95 percent for jobs outside of retail, food service, building maintenance, and construction.
As discussed in the July 2012 Index, while online job listings don't include all jobs and job seekers, they can reflect dynamism in the job market.A trends analysis by the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership (CCWP) of data from Burning Glass reveals that in Illinois, demand for workers is spread across a broad spectrum of occupations. In 2013, no occupational group claimed more than 14 percent of total postings in the state.

Billionaire's Campaign Contribution Among Biggest In Recent History
By Huffington Post

June 13
WASHINGTON -- With a $2.5 million contribution to Illinois
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner, Chicago-based hedge fund executive Ken Griffin has written the largest check to a political campaign in recent history.
Griffin, well known for saying the very wealthy have an "insufficient influence" in politics, is the richest man in Illinois and a top donor in state politics with large donations to both parties. He has made six-figure contributions to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's campaign and funds the state Republican Party.
His contributions to Rauner, first reported by the Chicago Tribune, are stratospheric. Overall, Griffin has given $3.6 million to the Republican's campaign to defeat Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. The contributions include the use of Griffin's personal jet to travel the state.

Immigration Reform Key to Innovation Economy Growth in Illinois
May 2014
Graduation ceremonies are times of celebration for those of us who are presidents of colleges and universities here in Illinois. As university leaders charged with educating the next generation of our state's innovators, we applaud the accomplishments of all of our graduates, and particularly those awarded degrees in high-demand STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math). However, graduation ceremonies also put our flawed immigration system center stage-a system that inhibits economic growth and must be a priority for meaningful reform this legislative session.
As university presidents, we are acutely aware of the connection between immigration and innovation in Illinois-and are deeply troubled by the fact that a significant portion of our students are unable to stay in the U.S. after they graduate. Immigrant students in Illinois earning STEM degrees at our universities now represent nearly one out of every four (24%) Illinois graduates in those fields (up from 18% between 2011 and 2012).

Innovation Hubs Drive Jobs, Entrepreneurship and Return of Investment across Illinois
by ISTC
By Adam Pollet, Director, Illinois Department of Economic Development and Opportunity (DCEO)
More than 20 innovation hubs launched by state or university dollars serve as connection points for the innovation ecosystems for regions and technologies across Illinois from Rockford to Carbondale. They serve as magnets for talent, ideas, and investment. These physical spaces connect the state's world-class research, talent, and industry to create new technology-based products, companies, and jobs.
The hubs highlighted in the recent ISTC Innovation Hub fact sheet (also below) demonstrate the direct role that these centers, and State support, have on growing Illinois' economy and transforming key regional industries including biopharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and clean tech, including clean coal. Over the past 15 years, more than $214 million in State investment has seeded $5.3 billion in private sector investment and federal support. A 25:1 leverage rate for Illinois tax payer dollars is an impressive return on investment and demonstrates the importance of State dollars as a catalyst for further investment in our economy through science and technology

Thank you, Donald TRUMP
By Crains
June 16
The story of TRUMP Tower has deeper foundations than the recent outrage of the sign Mr. TRUMP has installed. While the process of getting the building's design approved was fraught (remember Mayor Richard M. Daley insisting that TRUMP's architects add a spire?), once the TRUMP Tower was up, Chicagoans liked it. It respected its neighbors and connected organically to the river, a great addition to the skyline between Willis (Sears) Tower and the John Hancock Center.
Mr.
TRUMP
had done the seemingly impossible: He got Chicagoans to embrace something built by a Republican reality TV star from New York. A feat comparable to making tea partiers sign up for Obamacare, or birthers accept Barack Obama's Hawaiian birth certificate.

"Holding parking assistance technology demonstrations in a congested urban setting like Chicago allows people to see how applicable and relevant the solutions are," said CDA Global Project Technical Manager Sam Azuz, who animated the demos. "We received quite a bit of positive feedback from people on the streets of Chicago regarding how they could really use the parallel parking feature." Following the demos, Françoise Colpron and Jean-François Tarabbia, along with U.S. Human Resources Director Dennis Clark, visited the Illinois Institute of Technology, one of Chicago's top technology learning centers, which has a strong vehicle R&D program.
