Youth Ministry at Fourth Presbyterian Church

top
Welcome to February, you guys. There is a bunch of great stuff happening this month, like our Interview with an Atheist and our Youth-Led Worship Sunday. There is also a bake sale fundraiser for our summer trips to Cuba, Detroit, and Montreat. Every week has something exciting and interesting to get involved in. It's a good time to be a youth at Fourth Presbyterian Church.

It all kicks off this Sunday, which is also Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday. Kudos to Finn McGaan and Eddie Kenig for their announcements in worship about that last Sunday! Also this Sunday there will be Youth Choir at 9:30 a.m., Confirmation Circles will meet in Room 5A at 10:00 a.m., and youth not in Confirmation can come to Anderson Hall at 10:00 am. to help set up for the Souper Bowl. There will be bagels at 10:45 a.m. for Junior High (in Room 4G) and Senior High (in the Bumpus Room), immediately followed by youth groups at 11:00 a.m. We're planning the youth-led worship service this week, so come ready to work!

Speaking of bagels, click this link to sponsor a week's worth of them in February.

Please note that there will not be a parent meeting this Sunday.

If you're in Confirmation, the Homelessness Immersion experience this Friday night (February 3) will challenge you to see your city through other peoples' eyes. And don't forget to register for the Spring Retreat.

If you are looking for a way to give back, we have some opportunities to donate and volunteer going on right now.

Finally, here's a prayer for today, even for every day this week.

Holy God, your love is higher than the heavens
and your grace is wider than the sea.
Awaken our hearts to the joy of your presence
and open our lips to sing your praise;
to the glory of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Go in peace,

Rocky

souperbowlhomelessnessSign Up for the Confirmation Homelessness Immersion

On Friday, February 3, Confirmation participants will experience homelessness firsthand. Partnering with the Night Ministry and Deborah's Place, we will spend the night learning what it's really like to be homeless and discovering ways we can serve people who are experiencing homelessness. This is a powerful experience.

Please click this link to sign up, so that we can make adequate preparation. The sign-up asks for a $50 contribution, which allows us to compensate the Night Ministry and Deborah's Place for their time and work.

souperbowlSouper Bowl of Caring

As is tradition, we will be participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday, February 5. Sign up here for a volunteer spot to help collect canned goods and monetary donations for the Elam Davis Social Service Center Food Pantry. We will be collecting at all three Coffee Hours.

atheist"Interview an Atheist" on February 12

Kile Jones of the "Interview an Atheist at Church" project, will be the guest of the Confirmation and Senior High groups on Sunday morning, February 12. Youth are invited to come meet Kile, hear his story, and ask him any questions they have about how he sees the world. Kile cares a lot about advancing mutual understanding and respect among people of faith and people of no faith, and this is a great opportunity to engage in that with him.
youthledYouth-Led Worship on February 19

The 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services on Sunday, February 19 will be designed, start-to-finish, by Fourth Church youth. The 9:30 service will be led by Senior High students, giving seniors an opportunity to preach, and the 11:00 service will be led by sixth- through eighth-graders. Eighth graders are invited to preach in that service. If you are a senior or an eighth grader who thinks you might like a crack at preaching that day, email Rocky to say so.

volunteerVolunteer Opportunities and Donations
  • Senior High Youth, it's that time of year again! Looking for service hours? We will have some opportunities in the coming months if you need to finish getting your service hours, or if you just want to volunteer to make the world a better place! Email Shelley as early as possible!
  • Calling all shoeboxes and magazines! That's right, we're at it again. Bring us your old shoeboxes and magazines for the next two Sundays.
