A Hymn Festival with the New Organ!
|
Led by Organist Michael Burkhardt
|
This Wednesday evening an inspiring hymn festival will be played on the new Andrew Pipe Organ!
The festival, sponsored by the National Association of Lutheran Musicians, will be led by Michael Burkhardt, cantor at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Livonia, Michigan; artist-professor of organ at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan; and artistic director of the Detroit Handbell Ensemble and the Hearts, Hands, and Voices worship and fine-arts program for children.
Dr. Burkhardt has performed and led seminars at both national and regional events for the American Guild of Organists, the Hymn Society, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts, and the American Choral Directors Association. Since 2003 he has made six performance-teaching tours to South Korea and Singapore.
He is known for leading inspiring and innovative hymn festivals, so Wednesday evening promises to be a moving one.

A Candlelit Evening of Prayer, Singing, and Reflection
|
Join us tomorrow night for our monthly service in the style of Taizé at 7:30 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel.
The Taizé service provides an opportunity to gather in a contemplative, prayerful setting at the end of a busy week. Candles; easy-to-learn songs from various countries, traditions, and languages; and a period of silence all contribute to a time to reflect and to open oneself to God. We gather for this service on "fourth Fridays at Fourth Church."
As it is each month, the service will be preceded by opportunity to walk the labyrinth in Anderson Hall between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. This meditative walk takes approximately twenty minutes, and members of the labyrinth ministry team are present to offer guidance for first-time labyrinth walkers.
Time:
Friday, July 22
Between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m., Labyrinth Walk

Volunteer Opportunities Also Available
|
The annual School Supply Drive is off to a great start--but we still have lots of supplies to collect and organize for our children and youth connected with the Chicago Lights Urban Farm, Summer Day, and Tutoring programs. Filled backpacks and school supplies for these children and youth are being collected at morning Coffee Hour on Sundays and at the reception desk during the week. You can also sign up there to fill a backpack for a child, donate school supplies, or help receive, sort, and distribute school supplies and backpacks. A list of needed backpack supplies is available here; a list of needed Chicago Lights Tutoring supplies is available here; and a list of School Supply Drive volunteer opportunities is available here.
To volunteer with or learn more about the School Supply Drive, stop by Coffee Hour this Sunday morning or contact Anne Ellis at 312.573.3369.
