New Academy Classes!
|
New Academy for Faith and Life classes kick off this Sunday! Come join us for one or more of these great adult education opportunities. All classes meet on the fifth floor of the Gratz Center.
"God, Suffering, and Evil"
with Anna Case-Winters 9:30 a.m. (4 weeks)
If God is good and all-powerful, why is there so much suffering and evil in the world? For people of faith, this is a perennial and perplexing question. This class will explore the questions and responses Christian faith has to offer on this topic.
"Making Room at the Table:
Understanding and Solving Hunger in America"
with Vicky Curtiss, Adam Fronczek, Dan Hula, and Matt Gross 9:30 a.m. (4 weeks)
Hunger is a multifaceted issue, with economic, political, cultural, and moral dimensions that play out on the national, local, and personal level. This issue of reducing hunger and helping those in need of adequate, nutritious food has been one of the highest mission priorities of Fourth Presbyterian Church. This four-week course, planned in collaboration with the Hunger and Poverty Team of Fourth Church's Mission Committee, is intended to reenergize that commitment.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
with Jeff Doane 11:00 a.m. (4 weeks)
In a time of dramatic scientific advances, ethics and social justice issues related to science can lag behind. Rebecca Skloot provides a provocative case study of such in her detailed, expressive book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Course participants will work their way through the book, and engaged discussion will be the order of the day for each class.
Becoming Calvin
with Fourth Acts and Randall Zachman 11:00 a.m. (4 weeks)
This class will explore the early life of the Frenchman who was a defining figure of the Protestant Reformation. Come and join in this reimagining of one young man's coming of age during a time of social, political, and religious upheaval. Learn how young Jehan Cauvin became Calvin, the leader who effected such great change.
