 Message from Parker

Bella and CC sharing secrets one recent afternoon in the barn.
Dear Friends,

Tonight, Tuesday evening, May 28, we've arranged to show Girl Rising, a powerful new documentary about girls in developing countries. It moved me when I watched it last month. And I felt compelled to share this documentary with the families in my life.

Please join us at 6:00 PM in the Forsyth Country Day School lecture hall (follow the signs.)

A disclaimer: Some of the material is disturbing and not appropriate for young children. However, I'm very comfortable showing Cashlyn, who is 10. The disturbing parts are handled tastefully and with innuendo instead of graphic explanations. But please check out the movie trailer below and make up your own mind.

Some of our local schools have EOGs tomorrow. But the film should be over by 7:30 PM. Anyone who wants to slip out early is welcome to do so. Even if you can only spare a few minutes, the snippet you see could change your perspective, and it might change your child's life.

To view a clip of the movie, click here. For our local friends, we hope to see you tonight!

In other news, our world is jam packed with crazy ponies riding in hotel elevators, ponies in libraries, pony rides for hundreds, weddings, Michelle Obama, and oh yes, famous horsewomen visiting CLS!

Read on for details on all the fun!  We can hardly wait to see you soon, at the barn!

Parker

P.S. Anyone who knows me knows I love ALL things that sparkle! If it can be blinged up or covered over with sequins and sparkles, count me in! Well, a couple of weeks ago, a barn mom let slip that there is this wonderful gizmo called a Tulip. And with it, you can glue rhinestones on ANYTHING THAT MOVES! Apparently, these clever devices have been out for some time, but the barn moms banded together to keep this secret from me for fear that neither man nor beast would be safe. THEY WERE RIGHT!!

I armed myself with not one but TWO bedazzling Tulips. And then I received this photo from an anonymous admirer.

First, we bedazzled Cashlyn's horse's blanket. Then we moved on to Cashlyn's shorts and leggings. And just look what we did to my grandmother's walker!

The craziness and fun never ends at

CLS Announces renowned Instructor/Judge Ellen Beard will head Advanced Camp -- And we have
 A NEW CAMP DATE!

Update your calendars: July 29 - Aug. 2

These are the NEW DATES for CLS's Advanced Show Rider Camp!

And we are overjoyed to announce that the camp will be lead by legendary trainer/instructor/judge Ms. Ellen Beard of Columbia, Mo.

Ellen has worked in the equine industry for more than 30 years. A Kentucky native, she grew up working with national-caliber horses in the heart of show horse country. Growing up and during her formative years, Ellen worked and rode and worked under equitation legend, Lillian Shively, at the famed Delovely Farms.

Ellen currently is a professor in the Equine Studies program at Stephens College. She has trained numerous World and National Champion horse and rider combinations.

A nationally-recognized USEF judge and clinician, Beard currently co-chairs the USEF Saddle Seat Equitation Committee, and USA Saddle Seat World Cup Committee.

She also serves on the UPHA Equitation Committee. Recently, she has worked with such famous show horse businesses as Cryst-A-Kell, Stachowski Farm and 6D Ranch.

For questions about this special day camp at CLS, please contact Parker. To register, click here.  Spaces are extremely limited, and they will fill quickly. So book soon to guarantee your spot!

PLEASE NOTE: Part of this camp will include critiquing show videos of our riders. So if you don't have a video of your rider at a recent show, please get one before camp!

Lovell's Little Bits News!
Welcome Totty!

Special thanks to Miranda and Lili Shope for retiring Totty at CLS! Because of the Youth Club's 501-C3 nonprofit status, the Shopes were able to donate Totty to our youth club, Lovell's Little Bits.

Now she will spend her days being an ambassador for the American Saddlebred!  Totty has quickly become a barn favorite. Children line up to love her and feed her treats. Watch for her at festivals, schools and ballgames soon, as she wows people with the beauty and grace of the magnificent American Saddlebred!

Special thanks to James and Jackie Hale in Columbiana, Alabama for recommending that the Shopes retire Totty with Lovell's Little Bits.

Sondra's wedding
On April 28, 2013, our sweet Sondra married Zach Warren, wowing everyone with her beauty and grace.

Special thanks to a group of CLS Barn Moms (and Dads!) who worked tirelessly to give Sondra and Zach such a gorgeous, fairybook wedding. "It was like having 10 doting mothers who love me unconditionally," said a crying Sondra. "Nobody will ever know how special this barn family is, or how generous our barn moms are. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world!"

Little Khloe nearly stole the show from Sondra when she walked the aisle tossing rose pedals.

Sondra is the office manager at CLS, and one of our most beloved instructors. She also is Ms. Parker's right hand, assisting in running all aspects of CLS.

Zach is a manager at Newk's restaurant in Winston-Salem.

Best wishes to this gorgeous young couple who danced the Tango as their first dance! They were sizzling hot! And oh so in love!

CLS Barn Family honored by First Lady Michelle Obama!

On May 7, the Dwiggins family, Don, Patsy and Abby, were invited to a book signing by Michelle Obama. As the First Lady promoted her book, American Grownshe honored those working to promote Food Bank Gardens, just like the one the Dwiggins help to coordinate right here in Winston-Salem.

The Betty and Jim Holmes Food Bank Garden's mission is to grow fresh, local food for our regional food bank, Second Harvest of Northwestern NC (from Burlington to Boone). With increasing poverty in our area due to the economy and severe loss of jobs, the food bank's needs have more than doubled in the past two years.

What we at CLS love about the Food Bank concept is that it helps our young people to learn lessons on many levels.
1. Feeding others
2. Healthy food education
3. Hands on garden work
4. Understanding that food comes from the ground, not a can.

Check it out, or better yet, volunteer!

Trotting Tuesday News!
For the umpteenth year in a row, CLS has been privileged to host Trotting Tuesdays for Salem College.

Salem offers continuing education courses called Courses for the Community. Again this spring, CLS was honored to host the horseback riding classes for Salem.

Five riders joined us, and they were so fun and full of life and energy and determination. Please click here for more information on Salem's continuing education programs.

And congratulations to our graduating Trotting Tuesdays class!

You guys were awesome!

Turbo's surgery
How many thousands of youngsters has Turbo taught? We don't think we can count that high.
Our beloved Turbo underwent surgery this month to remove a tennis ball-sized stone from his bladder. The folks at the Vet School at Virginia Tech masterfully removed the stone from our 25-year-old Arabian gelding.

The photos to the right show Turbo post-surgery, the day he returned to CLS. Thanks to the care of our wonderful staff, and many prayers from Turbo's fans, he is recovering beautifully.

Yes, we know it doesn't make sense to perform surgery on a 25-year-old, uninsured school horse. But some things only make sense to the heart.

If you would like to see the stone that was removed from Turbo, please stop by Ms. Parker's office. You won't believe your eyes! Or your nose. Ick!

Jamie and Johnny's new house:
2351 Darwick Road!

Please help us congratulate Jamie, Johnny, Kylie, Landon and Khloe Jankowicz on their new home!

This special family came to CLS after experiencing heart-wrenching loss both personally and financially after Jamie's father passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. They lost much. And they took a leap of faith to move to NC to start again.

When the SOLD sign went up, we all cried!

By the way, if you don't know already, the man responsible for giving the inside of the CLS barn its dramatic facelift is Johnny. Nearly all by himself, he has worked day and night to breathe new life into our tired, old magical stalls. Thank you Johnny!

News from The Children's Museum: Jessie James is in the building!

No need for a doubletake. You saw it right the first time. Yes, there is a pony in the library!

Special thanks to our friends at the Winston-Salem Children's Museum for once-again asking Jessie James to visit and host a special reading of a horsey book. Since Jessie frowns on reading in public, Ms. Parker stood in for him! His job? To wow the children with his charms -- and not poop!

It's a rough life.
But somebody has to do it!

Jessie James is the ST R of The American Girl Doll Fashion Show and Fundraiser for the Winston-Salem Children's Museum!
After riding the elevator, Jessie entered the Grand Ballroom of the Embassy Suites and
made himself right at home . . .

  Jessie James: Ambassador to the

 American Saddlebred Horse Industry.

Who Woulda Thought?!?!?!?

FCDS Colonial Day. And this time, Jessie James wasn't the star of the show!
It was CLS's honor and privilege to once again provide a horse for Forsyth Country Day School's annual Colonial Day.

Turbo normally does the honors for this legendary annual event which celebrates life in Colonial America. But because of Turbo's surgery, the newest addition to our lesson horse family, Louis V (yes, that's short for Louis Vuitton!) was a fine stand-in. He didn't so much as flinch when the musket caboomed!

Thank you to our friends at FCDS for asking CLS to once again be a part of this historical day! And special thanks to Mr. Wallace Williamson for representing CLS, and sharing your teaching magic!
You always look so
danged handsome in that
 tri-cornered hat . . .

Legacy Saddlebreds @ CLS Update!

Congratulations to the Sanders family on their purchase of CH The Mystery Machine, aka Scooby!

Stephanie will show Scooby in the Walk and Trot equitation classes.

Scooby is a World and National Champion winning equitation horse who has a personality that is bigger than he is! Congratulations Stephanie and family!

Following great shows in Raleigh, the Legacy Team showed in Dallas, NC last weekend. And the horses and riders were in top form, winning scores of ribbons. But even more importantly, enjoying every second!
