We will be the best riding academy in the country, measured by our commitment to safety, honesty, service, excellence in every task, hard work, kindness, an unmatched work ethic, and a commitment to bettering communities near and far. We work every day with God's grandest creatures: His children and His horses. We never forget that this work is a Supreme honor and privilege.
We believe that people who are born loving horses are kindred spirits. We believe that children who learn to ride, care for and show horses grow and learn unparalleled life and leadership skills. We believe that people of all ages live better lives because of the joy our barn and our horses bring.

Ms. Sondra, you go enjoy your honeymoon.
We got this!

If you can start the day without caffeine, If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, If you can understand when your loved ones
are too busy to give you any time, If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If you can relax without alcohol, If you can sleep without drugs,
Then You Are Probably . . .

charge girls -- and a few very handsome, brilliant boys. But as I write this tonight, I'm thinking in particular about my girls. Watching these amazing spirits tromp in their muddy jod boots through this old barn -- and into their confident, driven selves -- is among my greatest joys.
I warn folks, only half-jokingly, not to stand between my girls and anything they want in this life -- unless you want

to get mowed down.
Often that determined spirit doesn't roar forth in my girls when they first arrive at CLS. It takes time to emerge. Sometimes it's cocooning under their gawky, awkward layers

of self-doubt. Or it's hiding behind freckles, and pink- and green-rimmed braces. But it's there, in every one of them. And God uses horses to reveal that spirit. I am witness to this phenomenon every day.
A few minutes ago, I returned home from watching Girl-Rising, a documentary about girls in developing countries and the often cruel, sick, suffocating situations they are born into. The scenes from the movie that are still reeling in my head are of big-eyed girls living in squalor, often as child slaves, totally degraded as humans. But I also see bravery. Girls who fight, outsmart, outwork and outwit the crushing oppression and brutality surrounding them. Instinctively, they know they are worthy. They risk their lives fighting for the right to go to school, the right to be master their own body and of their own fate.

I would like my girls to see this film. I wanted to watch it first to make sure it wasn't too graphic. And now that I have seen it, I want to share it.
Our girls are headed for successful lives. We work daily to
cultivate their spirits to ensure this, as we should. But I think it's incumbent on us to broaden their perspectives on what success looks like, and frankly, what the world outside of their protected American bubble looks like. My friend Lauren is a columnist for The Orlando Sentinel. She wrote recently that we're raising our children in a time and place in which the norm is "reality TV glorifying morbidly obese people, featuring smutty supposed models worrying about their fake marriages and dramatizing first-world problems -- 'My new iPhone won't fit in the back pocket of my favorite jeans!' "
Nicely put, I think.

I want our girls to be globally aware. I also want them to be self aware. And I want them to to know that the lives they lead are privileged because so many of their ancestors fought and died to make their privileges possible -- much like the children featured in Girl-Rising are doing right now for their own future generations.
A little change of perspective might be good for all of us, not just our girls. I'll keep you posted on the details of showing the film through the barn. Everyone will be welcome.
I hope to see you soon, at the barn!

Jessie James . . . about town
|

For the third year in a row, Jessie James represented CLS's Little Bits Youth Club in kicking off the RMH's "Sport a Shirt, Share a Night" program.
As usual, Jessie sported his own RMH shirt -- a size XXXL, if you're tacky enough to ask -- and he was smashingly dapper for the annual fundraiser kickoff!
You know you're in the presence of a true celebrity when people driving past slow down, roll down their windows, and call out to your pony --
and call him by name!
All proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem. Our local chapter provides a "home away from home" for families of children who are receiving medical care in our community's hospitals. The House and Family Room programs offer physical comforts, emotional support, education, and referral services designed to promote the well-being of the whole family. The house offers 35 bedrooms for families, three living rooms, two playrooms, a playground and a kitchen with home cooked meals almost every day...all for a reduced cost of $10 per night.
 |
The little booger was so tuckered from his celebrity appearance that he insisted on being hand fed his dinner, while resting his hooves, of course. Ridiculous!

His Next Stop Was:
Wake Forest University
for Earth Day!
 |
Jessie eyed and entertained the
co-eds, while Mr. Wallace spoke on the history of the horse (Wallace might have noticed the co-eds, too, but he would die if he knew we noticed!)
