 Message from Parker

 Dear Friends,

The official name of the award our children earned is "Youth Club of the Year!"

This means that  officials at the American Saddlebred Horse Association evaluated the work of riding academies and their youth programs from around the country. And once again, Lovell's Little Bits, earned the top spot. In addition, 2012 marked the 10th year in row that our children have raised the most money for charity of any Saddleseat barn. And with our work in Ghana last year, we became the first barn in our industry to complete an international service project and trip.
It's like herding cats when I arrive with our rowdy bunch each year at the ASHA convention! They definitely hear us coming!

"Lovell's Little Bits sets so many standards for the Saddlebred industry," said Brenda Newell, Sr. Programs Administrator at ASHA, when presenting the award during the association's annual convention, held recently in Lexington, KY.

Jamie and I, and several of our Little Bits and parents,
No trip to Lexington is complete without a visit to the famed KY Horse Park. Ainsley, Ivanna, Cashlyn and Irina spent an afternoon there while Ms. Parker attended boring meetings!

were there to accept the award. I wish barn mom Kim Stewart could have been there too. She is the mastermind behind our yearbook, and nearly all of our service work. I wish barn mom Medge Owen could have been there also. Medge made our work in Ghana possible on so many levels. Frankly, I wish the whole dang barn family could have been with us, because in ways large and small every day, every person here makes our work possible.

"I wanted to tell you I've been watching and listening to you on and off for the last year or two --  at shows, birthday parties, at the safety meeting today, or just when I've been around the barn with Caroline.  And I wanted to thank you for all you do for all those kids, and the special way you do it.  You're helping them learn about resilience, and caring, and strength, and grace -- that a good life isn't one that revolves only around them, and how great it is to be a part of something bigger than yourself:   all things we should be trying to help them understand better every day.  I know they will remember your voice and your words as they grow -- and they'll be able to call to mind those lessons at just the critical times in life when they'll need them. Again and again!

Nobody can know how deeply these words affect me -- much deeper than any award. As those who know me well know, I struggle when I see my former newspaper colleagues changing the world with their important work. On a much smaller scale, maybe together we're all doing some important work out of this old, dusty barn too.

Please, please, please, mark your calendars for March 9. Bring your family and come to the barn to help us celebrate our many blessings. Cash is turning 65. Ms. Jeanine is all ours now after retiring from her 30-year school teaching career. And Lovell's Little Bits have earned Youth Club of the Year!

The tire swings will be up! The band will play! And we will gather with our barn family to laugh and celebrate. We're expecting you!

Barn Safety Meeting Update

More than 50 students and parents turned out for the barn's Safety Meeting on February 23.  Thank you for such an
overwhelming turnout!

We have updated the Approved Pasture List as a result for those helpers who are at least 10 years of age. But remember: Those who are new to the list are still on restriction. New approved pasture safety helpers must:

1. Only go in the pasture with someone who has been on the pasture list for at least two years.

2. Follow every safety rule to the letter --
see posted signs -- or risk permanent removal from the list.

Mark your calendars now:

The next SAFETY MEETING and BARN HELPER TRAINING CLASS will be: Sunday Afternoon, April 7 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm

Tack Shop News!

Just in time for show season, let's make our caboodle list and check it twice ...

Do we have . . .

A pretty painted show helmet?

Back number magnets?

Bun bows and jeweled tie bars?

A sassy boot, helmet and glove bag?

And so much more! Visit Ms. Parker's office for a HUGE display of goodies!

Riding Lesson News:
Ms. Jeanine's lesson schedule for intenstive pre-show lessons is booking up quickly!

Private lessons, especially lunge lessons, are awesome for building muscle strength and memory. Every successful show rider incorporates lunge lessons into their training. Through the use of weights, bareback pads, balance balls and other exercises, riders develop skills and balance that are nearly impossible to achieve otherwise.

Please note that CLS riders who are beyond the beginner stage can schedule private lessons in addition to their group lessons. Both types of lessons are critical for a rider's development. But in order to take private lessons at CLS, intermediate and advanced riders must also take at least one weekly group lesson.

Since Ms. Jeanine recently retired from teaching school in the Forsyth County system, she is adding teaching days. Her private lesson times are already filling up! If you're interested, contact our office as soon as possible.

Show season is just around the corner!

The glamour life . . .
Several years ago, a young lady called wanting to be our summer intern. She arrived, wide-eyed and star-struck. It didn't take long for the stars to disappear from her eyes. Early one morning, about 2 am, it was nasty hot still and we were up doing laundry and packing for a horse show. I don't think I had bathed in about three days. We were miserable with exhaustion, heat, and grumpiness.

This young lady said, "Ms. Parker, may I tell you something? You know when I used to see you in all the horse magazines looking so pretty and glamorous and all -- well, you're nothing like that."

Alas, this young lady learned her lesson and is no longer in the horse business. When I saw poor Sondra this week, looking like a drowned rat after bringing in horses all morning in torrential downpours, I had to laugh.

The glamour life indeed . . .
