 | "Have you heard the latest??" |
Dear Friends,
I tell my babies that barn friends are different. There's a kinship between barn friends that inexplicably binds. Barn friends often become forever friends.
I was reminded of this last week when I rounded the corner and saw Meredith Wright standing outside the CLS Tack Shop. Her visit was a complete surprise. After 20 years of rarely seeing or talking to each other, there wasn't even a moment of awkwardness or hesitation. Meredith and I grew up together riding horses and running half wild at a wonderful riding academy in Danville,VA, named Grenadier Farm.
We were stinky barn rats, spending every second of our free time together with our best friends, Sandspur and Izzy. They were ordinary enough school horses, but in our eyes they were glorious, splendid steeds. I see them clearly right now standing in that old barn with its creaky wooden tack room floor. My toes throb because Snuffy Smith, that ornery, cantankerous
pony, just stepped on them, again. I wipe cobwebs off the drink machine and slurp cold Pepsi from a grimy can. I smell the sweaty, crusty stench of summer saddle pads. I hear the squeak of metal cots and see flies coating our bunkhouse walls. I see Bugsy the Dalmatian licking our plates clean, and I feel giggles erupting from deep inside as we put the plates back in the kitchen cabinet ready for the next hungry kid. I can feel the pond water and gooey green algae dangling from our slimy selves after we sneak a swim. I can smell Mrs. Wiseman's 5 am coffee lace and see her loading the horses -- and then us -- into the horse van. I can see the creases in her leathery face, the cracks in her hands, and I hear her call me "Sweetie."
Mrs. Wiseman and her Grenadier Farm grew Meredith and me. That farm is home to our sweetest childhood memories. It's in our bones and blood. Even after all these years, we are Mrs. Wiseman's girls. And because of that, we're best friends still. No matter the years or challenges of our lives, we resume where we left off seamlessly. I know firsthand how powerful a role a barn can play in a child's life. So I am ever mindful of my responsibility to the Cash Lovell kids. Cashlyn and my other barn babies are my reason for being. Horses raise great kids. Horses inspire great friendships. And I'm so blessed to have a bird's-eye view.

2012 Scrapbook Ready for Viewing!
The annual book which documents all of the happenings and good work of Cash Lovell riders and families is ready for you to enjoy!
Barn mom extraordinaire, and director of our charity work, Kim Stewart, has truly outdone herself. Countless hours later, this book is truly awe-inspiring. I'm exhausted just reading all we did last year!
Judges at the American Saddlebred Horse Association will use this book to evaluate our youth club, Lovell's Little Bits, in comparison with other youth clubs around the country. Lovell's Little Bits is the winningest youth club in the association's history! Let's keep our fingers crossed for 2012. We will know the judge's decision in February when we take a group of our riders to Lexington, KY, for a national meeting and awards banquet.

And when you see Kim, give her a high five and a hug. We couldn't do the book, or the work it documents, without her!

Barn Summer Camp News!

Also, we have a question for our readers: It's been suggested that we host two other camps in 2013:
1. An all boy camp (I'm trembling at the thought!)
2. A Parent/Child camp
What do you think??

Legacy Saddlebreds Show Horse News!
|
 | Ms. Jamie and her assistant Khloe hard at work training in the CLS arena |
Congratulations to Max Michalek and his family on the selection of WC CH The Last Straw, aka "Strawberry," a gorgeous Saddlebred mare for Max to show in 2013! Strawberry comes to Legacy Saddlebreds from renowned Kentucky Saddlebred trainer, Nelson Green.
Congratulations to Brittany Lawrence on the selection of The Supreme Rose, aka "Sargeant," for Brittany to show this year. Sargeant is another stunning Saddlebred mare, formerly shown by longtime CLS friend Ms. Brenda Pulis, of Saddle & Bridle magazine. Peter and Kim Cowart of Statesville, NC are the mare's former trainers.
This will be the first season that Max and Brittany will ride and show their own horses. And their excitement is contagious!
Best of luck guys! And congratulations to Legacy trainer Jamie Jankowicz on two more super horse selections!

Riding Lesson News:
Private and Lunge Lesson Openings
|
 |
Ms. Jeanine and Avery Rose working with leg weights and stretch bands
|
Private lessons, especially lunge lessons, are awesome for building muscle strength and memory. Every successful show rider incorporates lunge lessons into their training. Through the use of weights, bareback pads, balance balls and other exercises, riders develop skills and balance that are nearly impossible to achieve otherwise.
 |

|
Please note that CLS riders who are beyond the beginner stage can schedule private lessons in addition to their group lessons. Both types of lessons are critical for a rider's development. But in order to take private lessons at CLS, intermediate and advanced riders must also take at least one weekly group lesson. Since Ms. Jeanine retired last week from teaching school in the Forsyth County system, she is adding teaching days. Her private lesson times are already filling up! If you're interested, contact our office as soon as possible. Show season is just around the corner!

"A dog is the only creature on earth that loves you more than he loves himself."
~ Josh Billings

It was a perfectly lovely dinner party -- until Cooper jumped onto the middle of the dining room table. At another recent gathering, my little bundle of rescued-from-the-kill-shelter joy, cocked his leg and wizzed in the middle of the floor.
Dare I mention the seat belts in my car? Or my designer Derby hat? Wait, let me tell you about the handle to my computer case and my favorite purple pumps. All Cooper's mangled victims.
Then there was last week's salad caper. I made the mistake of leaving a lovely garden salad on my desk unattended while I tacked a horse. When I returned, ranch dressing was dripping from every piece of my furniture and smeared across the floor.
As I type this, he is scooched underneath my legs, snoring. The sound wakes me most nights. Sounds like a freight train plowing through my bedroom.
I saw the below photo and immediately thought of Cooper . . .
