The Week of September 21, 2014
This Week's Message
A Desperate Man's Desperate Prayer - Jonah 2

From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.  While inside the fish, he composes a beautiful prayer that takes the form of a Psalm.

Calling All Halloween Fans

Downers Grove Community Church  will celebrate Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 31 from 5-7 pm.  We will need at least 10 cars to decorate their trunks and hand out candy to tiny trick-or-treaters who will come to our church parking lot.  If you are interested let Marge Vander Wagen know.  Flyers will be posted the first week of October to let Downers Grove know we care about them.

Young Family Brunch Group

A new group is forming for young families to get together with or without their children to play, have breakfast, exchange clothes and/or toys.  The first meeting will be held on October 4 at 9 am at Jessica Ahlers' home located at: 160 Springleaf Dr., Bolingbrook, IL. If you would like more information, please contact Jessica at (815) 557-9151 or higgythehalfshell@yahoo.com.

Crop Walk "Heads Up"

Please mark your calendars for Sunday, October 19 for the South Dupage Crop Walk."  CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. Neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world.  Different ages, different faiths and backgrounds-together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development as well as local hunger-fighting.  Some 2,000 communities across the country take part each year.  We will be registering walkers and accepting donations beginning today.  Last year we had 25 walkers from DGCC and brought in pledges of over $4,000.  Join us whether you walk or not that day.  We will have a team page for DGCC soon at www.crophungerwalkorg.  Please see Cathy Draayers or Shawna Reidy in the Fellowship Hall today or the next few Sundays.

Jesus And The Children Mural

A new "Jesus and the Children Mural" will be painted on the wall at the children's ministry entrance.  I know you will love it, as it will be painted by the same artist who painted the scene in the Fellowship Hall.  The cost of the painting has been covered by a congregational member.  Very exciting!  Anticipate a blessing!!

Coffee Break

Coffee Break, a non-denominational, inductive Bible study meets Wednesday at 9:30 am.  This year we have a Young Mother's Bible Study Group and babysitting is provided.  For more information, please contact Arlene Emde or Starr Hoekstra. All are welcome.

Sunday School News

Sunday School is held during the worship service for Kindergarten through 5th grade.  The children are excused from worship after the time of Praise and Worship, and led through an excellent curriculum.  We believe this is an exciting time for our children as they gather with other children their age. If you have any questions, please contact Judy Bury or Pastor Howard.

Adult Sunday School

We are studying Ray Vander Laan's video series, "Early Church." Ray is very gifted in searching out the historical and archeological roots of the Bible.  This study looks at the Early Church and some of the dynamics and challenges the first Christians faced in a world dominated by the Roman Empire.  The class meets in the Children's Worship Center from 10:45-11:30 am. Grab a cup of coffee and join us this Sunday.

Prayer Group

This group is an extension of the Prayer Concerns posted in the weekly bulletin, where we pray for the needs of the church and community is lifted up in prayer. We will meet again on Sunday, October 5 at 9 am just before Sunday service in the classroom near the front entrance of church.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Evening Bible Study News

The Men's and Women's Evening Bible Study groups began on September 9 and the next meeting will be on September 23.  For the first 5 weeks, the men will be studying the book entitled "Always True" by James Macdonald. This Tuesday, the women will be studying the book entitled "Celebrate - Discovering Joy In Life's Ordinary Moments." The 'regular' Evening Bible Study groups will meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7 pm at the following locations: Men: Fellowship Hall; Women: Church Office.  All are welcome.

Creative Administrative Director

The Downers Grove Community Church will be searching for this part time position in the very near future.  If you are interested, or know someone who is interested, please contact Pastor Howard for a job description.

Table & Chair Arrangements

If you need tables and chairs moved or set up for your meeting, please contact our facility director, Lou Campbell.  He is pleased to assist you in any way possible. You can email him @campbell_louis@sbcglobal.net.  Thank you.
