A few notes about PHDC's endorsement process

To vote on endorsements, new members need to join PHDC at least 2 months before the endorsement meeting. In addition, all members are required to have attended at least two PHDC-sponsored meetings or other events during the past year. Absentee ballots are allowed, but in order to vote absentee, you must be a voting member whose dues are paid and who has already attended two meetings in the past year.

Upcoming in the neighborhood & district
This Saturday, March 26, 3 - 5pm. Assemblymember David Chiu hosts a happy hour in the Bayview, co-sponsored by PHDC, to welcome new neighbors and see old friends.. After 20 years of living in the northeast neighborhoods, Assemblymember Chiu is moving south with his wife and new baby - to Candlestick Point in the Bayview.  Old Skool Café, 1429 Mendell St.

Wednesday, March 30, 6 - 8pm. Railyard Alternatives and I-280 Boulevard Feasibility Study  - in case you missed the first one, SF Planning is back in Potrero Hill, in a larger space, to discuss the multi-agency program studying transportation and land use alternatives in the most rapidly growing areas of the City. In anticipation of the Downtown Rail Extension (DTX), the electrification of Caltrain, and High-Speed Rail, the City is studying how best to coordinate these projects in a unified vision for the area rather than building each project independently. The first phase of the RAB has prepared conceptual design alternatives for four different project components, in addition to a study of overall land use considerations and opportunities for placemaking:
・Make I-280 a boulevard
・Value engineer the proposed DTX alignment
・Create a loop track/extension to the East Bay to enhance operational capacity at the ・Transbay Transit Center
・Reconfigure, relocate, or substantially reduce the 4th and King railyard
・Create placemaking, neighborhood connectivity, employment and transit-oriented development opportunities
Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro. Registration, more info here.

(Upcoming - date & location tbd) Community meeting re: Navigation Center in Dogpatch. Navigation Centers are a proven model to connect people experiencing homelessness with permanent housing solutions. The first Navigation Center at 1950 Mission has been highly successful, with nearly 400 people brought in off the streets and 80% re-housed within 58 days.

The City is expanding the Navigation Center model, which represents a shift in approach, culture, and outcomes from its traditional shelter system, to new sites. The Dogpatch site would utilize the same approach to shelter, including small community (≤80 people), 24/7 staffing with high staff/client ratio, tranquil environment with "village"-inspired design, outdoor space, referral-only access. Come find out more. Presented by the Mayor's Office of HOPE; postponed from Mar. 30th because of conflict with the community meeting mentioned above.
Homelessness in SF - March 1st meeting followup

We see and read about the problem of homelessness almost every day. On March 1st, the conversation was about solutions - real, imagined; happening, never tried; possible, impossible; short-term, long-term; direct action, legislation; good, perfect...

The amazing panel:
PHDC Vice-President Tony Kelly moderated. The program opened with vehicle dweller Melodie, reading a letter she had written about some of the trauma she and some friends have experienced.

In addition to their own organizations, panelists recommended some resources to find out more and get involved. In San Francisco:  HandUp online fundraising to help an individual in need; volunteering with  Project Homeless Connect at events offering many services under one roof;  Downtown Streets Team. Also - a "tiny homes" success story at  Dignity Village in Portland, OR.

Connections were made among audience and panelists - and collaborations appear to be happening. The complete video of the program is here.

*Amy Weiss requests that you please take the online quiz/survey to test your knowledge about the status quo of homelessness in SF and learn more about the Saint Francis Homelessness Challenge. Thanks.
