PHDC NEWSLETTER
ISSUE #84  DECEMBER, 2015
Dear , PHDC logo

How can it possibly be time to join PHDC for 2016 already? I know, every month (year!) that goes by is a smaller fraction of your life so far. Anyway it is that time again. Still a deal - $25 per year for residents + $10 per additional household member, $20 for affiliates. Please join online now, or at the meeting January 5th. Thank you.

And thanks to everyone who came to our neighborhood Holiday Party to share in the fun and help to contribute over 100 lbs. of food to the Food Bank! Happy, rainy rest of the holidays to you and yours.

Next meeting Tuesday, January 5th: energy, schoolyards, pin-the-issue-on-the donkey, more

cleanpowersf logo CleanPowerSF,
originally called Community Choice Aggregation, will return with another update. A certain privately-owned utility company has been busily trying to undermine publicly-owned CleanPowerSF's plans to let City residents choose to receive a higher proportion of their electricity from renewable sources.

District 2 Supervisor Mark Farrell will discuss the Shared Schoolyard Project, which he revamped in 2012 to open playgrounds to the public on weekends, with the goal of expanding it to 80 schools.

Paris Climate Change Conference report. PHDC Executive Committee member Audrey Cortes was there - and she'll give us her impressions.

Nominations will be open for 2016 Club Officers (election to be held in February). Please consider running for a position on the Executive Committee. You can find a list of positions and general duties in Article VI of the Club Bylaws. Reply to this email with questions, or for more info.

What our allies are up to
St Francis
Amy Farah Weiss, PHDC's choice for Mayor in the recent election, did not stop working to improve the lives of San Franciscans when the campaigns ended. Far from it. She has taken on what she dubs the Saint Francis Homelessness Challenge, to tackle a huge and daunting problem. She invites you: "On January 2nd, the Saint Francis Homelessness Challenge team will be showcasing a proof of concept for our Healing Hubs & Sleep Sanctuaries pilot proposal."
Donations of packages of socks for unhoused neighbors will be accepted all day, and many services and volunteer trainings will be offered. See a full description of the event here.
WHEN: Saturday, January 2, 10am - 6pm
WHERE: SOMArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan St
DISCLOSE logo
The California DISCLOSE Act (mandating clear unambiguous disclosure of the top 3 true funders of a political ad on the ad itself), that PHDC has strongly supported, has been struggling to get through the Legislature for five years, steadily weakened by that very Legislature's big-money campaign donors (surprise, surprise).
Now here's the good news: The Voters Right to Know Act, an initiative being circulated by volunteers and paid signature-gatherers, is aiming for the November ballot. It contains the DISCLOSE Act and more: covers independent expenditures for & against candidates and ballot measures (DISCLOSE legislation only covers the latter), adds the right to campaign disclosure to the California State Constitution, and more. Find out more here.
You can help get this on the ballot by signing the petition at the Jan 5th meeting - and taking one or more home to get your family and friends to sign. It's easy - in only 2 weeks I've collected over 130 signatures.

sierra club logo Sierra Club election. My source tells me that, after the ballots were counted on Saturday, the longtime, committed Sierra Club SF Group of environmental activists won board seats over the realtor-lobby-backed challengers in a "Nixonian" landslide. Good on everyone who joined the Sierra Club in time to vote to protect such a valuable ally, and on those who were already members and took the time to vote.
