PHDC MEMBERS' NEWSLETTER
ISSUE #80  AUGUST, 2015
Dear , PHDC logo

PHDC's first two endorsements for 2015 are Ross Mirkarimi for Sheriff and Wendy Aragon for City College Trustee. Congrats to both!

The club's voter education and club endorsement process continues with TWO endorsement meetings in September. In fact, September is insanely busy for our club; we are also hosting our annual party & auction on the 19th. Read all about it below.

Joni Eisen, President
TUES SEPT 1st: Ballot measures. TUES SEPT 15th: Mayoral & other candidates, more ballot measures
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1st will be Housing and Good-Government Night at PHDC. These props, about the housing crisis and related issues, will be covered (click on titles for summaries):
These props about good government will be covered:
There will be mini-debates on the more contentious propositions. Every measure will have a knowledgeable speaker or two, and time for Q&A. Measures whose only official opposition is from either a lone Republican or the SF Taxpayers Association will have opposing arguments read or summarized by PHDC board members.
★District Attorney George Gascon
will speak briefly about his tenure and (unopposed) campaign, and answer questions.
This endorsement meeting starts early, to fit everything in: 6:30pm.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th
will prove that Ed Lee is NOT running unopposed! Serious candidates for Mayor who have thought long and hard about the issues that matter most to San Franciscans should be afforded the opportunity to share their ideas via public debates and policy discussions. Mayoral candidate debate/discussion, with Francisco Herrera, Dan Kappler (write-in), Amy Farah Weiss and others invited. Mayor Lee, are you up to the challenge?
✦Two actually unopposed candidates have been invited to speak: City Attorney Dennis Herrera and Treasurer José Cisneros.
✦Three more ballot measures will be covered: B, G, & H.
✦This endorsement meeting will start at our regular time, 7:00pm.

Both meetings will take place at Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St at Southern Hts. Both meetings will end with members voting* on endorsements.

*Members in good standing, whose 2015 dues are current (new members must have joined PHDC at least 2 months prior to the endorsement meeting), and who have attended at least 2 meetings or other PHDC-sponsored events in the past year, may vote either in person or by absentee ballot.
Coming Saturday, September 19th - the 7th Annual!

You're invited to enjoy food, drink, jazz and great deals! PHDC's "Shop Local" Silent Auction is a celebration of and for the community - and a fundraiser for the club's many educational and democracy-enhancing activities. We never solicit or accept money from candidates or campaigns we endorse - so this event and membership dues are it for us.

The live jazz is a trio of amazing local musicians, the food is courtesy of club members and local eateries, and the tempting items to bid on are donated by the wonderful merchants (many new to the neighborhood) and artists of Potrero Hill & Dogpatch. No-host bar.

5pm - 8pm. Dogpatch Saloon, 2496 Third St at 22nd.

August 4th meeting followup
PHDC endorses the re-election of Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, and Wendy Aragon for CCSF Trustee
CCSF candidate forum The Community College Board candidate forum included three of the four candidates running for one open seat (left to right): Wendy Aragon, Alex Randolph (appointed incumbent), and Tom Temprano - brilliantly moderated by PHDC VP Loretta Lynch (right).
Sheriff candidate debate
The Sheriff candidate debate featured all three candidates (left to right): John Robinson, Ross Mirkarimi (incumbent), and Vicki Hennessy. Moderating that one - brilliantly of course - was PHDC Secretary J.R. Eppler (right).

The Neighborhood House theater was packed to the rafters, the candidates totally engaged and engaging. After the meeting was adjourned, members turned in their ballots, and board members did the counting while candidates and audience kept the conversations going.

Voting results: Wendy Aragon for Community College Board, and Ross Mirkarimi for Sheriff!

The club also passed a resolution in support of saving Rincon Park (site of Oldenberg's "Cupid's Bow" on the waterfront) from being shaded by new towers, and amended the Bylaws to lower the threshold for endorsing candidates in multi-seat races from 60% to 50%.
