ISSUE #78  JUNE, 2015
Dear , PHDC logo

We're back after our little break, and so appreciate those who stepped up to help PHDC pay its increased rent to the Neighborhood House. You too can join PHDC for calendar year 2015. If you want to. Thanks.

Tuesday, July 7: Black Lives Matter in San Francisco and beyond. Yes. They do.
The news has been maddening, depressing, heart-breaking. We need to stand together and say this has to stop. For those who want to respond to the tragic, senseless violence against the people of Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, here is the church website. You can donate either to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund to help the families of the nine victims with funeral expenses, or to the Reverend Pinckney Fund to help continue his work.

Meanwhile, back in San Francisco, we are putting together a stimulating panel of strong voices from various branches of the Black community, to meet and open up the conversation, and to offer folks in Potrero Hill a chance to learn and get involved in a way that is both meaningful and helpful. More later; check our website or Facebook page for updates.

WHEN: Tuesday, July 7, at 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St @ Southern Hts
Tomorrow (Mon June 22) is Congressional
Climate Message Day
Every day there is dire news underlying the urgency of addressing climate change. Even the Pope realizes that cap & trade merely enables wealthy polluters to buy the right to destroy, and does nothing to protect the poor.

900 Citizens' Climate Lobby volunteers - including yours truly - will be meeting with elected officials and their staff on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, lobbying for federal legislation enacting carbon fee and dividend: an annually-increasing fee on CO2 emissions at the point of entry, and the return of all money in regular installments to U.S. households.

Our message can be stronger and more compelling if you contact your one Representative and two Senators Monday June 22 - and declare your support for a fee on carbon emissions. Please call or tweet members of CongressSome instructions and sample text can be found here.

Prop 13 reform, end-of-life option, Plaza 16
Make the Commercial Property Tax System Fair. On June 8, State Senators Holly Mitchell and Loni Hancock introduced SCA5, legislation that would finally make our property tax code fair by requiring big businesses and wealthy property owners to pay their fair share. Once it's been fully implemented, it will mean an additional $9 billion a year in new revenues for our schools and local communities. Learn more about Prop 13 reform here.

SB 128 End-of-Life Option Act ("Death with Dignity") is heading to the Assembly Health Committee on June 23 in Sacramento. If this is important to you, please call or visit Assemblyman David Chiu (if you are a constituent), who is a crucial vote on that committee, and let his staff know. District office is at 455 Golden Gate Ave, #14300. Telephone: (415) 557-3013.

Plaza 16 Coalition has it happening. Wed June 24: From Parkmerced to the Mission: workers, tenants, and neighbors unite against Maximus (also the owner of Parkmerced) greed. 16th and Mission BART Plaza, 11:00am rally, 11:30am march. Thurs July 2: Mission takes the Planning Commission to Stop the Beast on Bryant. Save the arts & community businesses at 2000 Bryant. City Hall, Room 400, 12 noon.

SFPUC is hosting a lunchtime webinar on Tuesday, June 23, 12:15 - 12:45pm with community panelists, to prepare to kick off the Environment Review of the proposed new biosolids facilities at its Southeast Treatment Plant. This plant, located in the Bayview, handles 80% of the city's sewage and storm water flows.

The Planning Dept will publish the Notice of Preparation for the Environment Scoping this week.   Call in (or email) on Tuesday and pose your questions to Project Manager Carolyn Chiu and Plant Superintendent George Engel. Let them know your critical issues. Your voice counts. For more information and to sign up, click here. Once you RSVP, you will receive a link to participate.
