Next meeting Tuesday, April 7th: A veritable smorgasbord of political issues
|

Here's what's on the agenda, not necessarily in the order shown:
Tom Jones, architect, Cal Poly professor and affordable housing expert, and legendary land-use attorney Sue Hestor will discuss the questionable actions of the ever-expanding entity known as the Academy of Art University. Read an article about it in the SF Business Times: "After years of flouting city rules..." Tom Gallagher, author, teacher, activist and former Massachusetts state legislator, will present a resolution against further U.S. aggression in or over Iraq. Read the resolution here. Sue Vaughan, chair of Sierra Club San Francisco Group, will talk about AB 61, a bill introduced in the State Assembly by Travis Allen, R-Huntington Beach, which would grant legal authority to local transit agencies to allow private shuttles to use public bus stops. Here's an SF Examiner article about AB 61.
Sue Vaughan, and possibly another speaker, will also ask for our support of SB 47 (Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo), a bill that would enact a 2-year moratorium on tire-crumb artificial turf to allow further study. It recently passed the Senate Environmental Committee, due in part I'm sure to PHDC Executive Committee members urging Senator Leno to vote "Yes." PHDC will hold a special election to fill a position created in March when members voted to add a fourth Officer-At-Large to the Executive Committee. Audrey Cortes has been nominated. Updates on various PHDC projects & issues will be presented briefly by club officers. Discussion and voting on a 3-part amendment to the Bylaws. WHEN: Tuesday, April 7th at 7pmWHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St @ Southern Heights

SF City Attorney Dennis Herrera spoke about his wide-ranging work protecting the city and its residents, pursuing cases about protecting children from sex trafficking, defending evicted tenant relocation payments, saving City College from the ACCJC, challenging the State Lands Commission's attempt to nullify Proposition B, suing the state of Nevada for patient dumping, championing gay rights, and much more. A lively Q&A session followed the City Attorney's remarks.
PHDC board member Bob Boileau explained the recent and ongoing Republican threat to Social Security, and organized an on-site letter-writing session to Representative Pelosi, urging her to protect and expand Social Security. Some members took their letters home and mailed them after the meeting.
Members passed an amendment to the Bylaws increasing the number of At-Large Officers to four, and rejected an amendment to prohibit absentee voting.
