PHDC NEWSLETTER
ISSUE #63  MARCH, 2014
Dear , PHDC logo

It's time to look at the rest of the June 3rd Primary Election ballot. Come to our next meeting on Tuesday, April 1st. Despite the date, we're not fooling around!

Joni Eisen, President
Next meeting Tuesday, April 1st: Secretary of State candidate forum, other candidates & ballot measures
Alex Padilla Leland Yee
A forum of Democratic candidates for Secretary of State - l. to r., Derek Cressman, Alex Padilla (or rep), Leland Yee - will be moderated by PHDC's own inimitable J.R. Eppler. Audience members will be able to submit written questions during the forum. The candidates have been asked to fill out brief questionnaires, which PHDC members will be able to access when they are returned.

Candidates for two other statewide offices are scheduled to appear. Running for Controller, Democrats John Pérez (or rep) and Betty Yee will discuss their campaigns and answer your questions, as will the three candidates for SF Superior Court Judge, Seat 20 (the only one that's contested): Daniel Flores, Carol Kingsley, Kimberly Williams. No Democrat running for other statewide or federal office has any competition. So much for choice in elections.

Three propositions will be covered, with speakers in support and opposition:
SF Proposition A - Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response Bond. Speakers confirmed, names tba.
CA Proposition 41 - Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention Bond Act of 2014.
Michael Blecker, Executive Director of Swords to Ploughshares, will speak in favor; a PHDC board member will present arguments against.
CA Proposition 42 - Public Records. Open Meetings. State Reimbursement to Local Agencies. PHDC board members will present arguments for and against.

PHDC voting members in good standing* will vote on endorsements in the above races, as well as everything else in the June Primary. Ballots will be counted at the end of the meeting.

As you probably know, on March 5 PHDC endorsed Yes on Prop B. That night the club was unable to take a position on the Campos-Chiu Assembly race, the vote having been tied. See below for more details, photos.

WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

Updates on what PHDC and friends have been up to
Voter registration & DISCLOSE at Sunday Streets. PHDC joined forces with the SF Working Group for Clean & Fair Elections to staff an ironing board in front of the Ferry Building at the season kickoff of Sunday Streets on March 9th. At right, Rebecca registers voters and spreads the word about SB 52, the CA DISCLOSE Act. The SF Working Group has resumed meeting at 1 to 3pm on the third Saturday of every month at the Potrero Branch Library, 1616 20th St.

More clean money & fair elections. The forces of big money are ever on the offensive: the Supreme (Corporate) Court has still not made its decision in McCutcheon v. FCC - which could flood elections with even more money. Individuals could directly contribute up to $3.6 million per election cycle to a single party and its candidates. On the day of the ruling - which could be this week - there will be a nationwide rapid response, including a rapid response event at 5pm on the steps of City Hall.

Revenue-neutral carbon tax. On Feb 26, a large majority of the SFDCCC passed Citizens Climate Lobby's resolution regarding a national carbon tax. It was introduced by me on behalf of PHDC, which was the first club to sign a letter of support. The resolution has been sent to the CA Democratic Party, and activists will be working to build support at the state level. CCL will also keep working with Congress and with some other states, to pass equitable carbon taxes to get us to clean energy and to avoid costs from climate disruption.

March 5 meeting followup: Assembly race, waterfront height limits
PHDC hosted a lively and informative debate (moderated by J.R. Eppler, it was "by far the most substantive," according to one of the participating campaigns) between Supervisors David Campos and David Chiu in their race for State Assembly District 17. The result of the endorsement vote? A flat-out tie. So PHDC's official position is - no position.

PHDC-Yes on B

Members did vote to endorse YES on Prop B, the Voter Approval for Waterfront Development Height Increases initiative, after presentations and Q&A with Jon Golinger for and Corinne Woods against. Two weeks later, in front of City Hall, some of us celebrated another move forward for Prop B, after a judge threw out the opposition's attempt to get the initiative thrown off the ballot.
