PHDC Newsletter
ISSUE #60  DECEMBER, 2013
Dear , PHDC logo

I hope you are enjoying the holiday season (and praying for rain).

The new email format should make our messages easier to read on a mobile device. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Joni Eisen, President
Next meeting: Tuesday, January 7, 2014
bring your own food
We begin our Club's eighth year with an issue central to PHDC's mission: protecting the rights of workers. UNITE HERE! Local 2, representing the 750 concessions workers employed by the SF Giants' subcontractor Centerplate at AT&T Park, will talk about their years-long struggle for a fair contract. Q&A to follow, of course. Read more here (from the workers) and here (from Centerplate).

Also on the meeting agenda: Assessing which topics & issues you would most like the Club to engage with this year, plus the opening of nominations for 2014 officers (election to be held in February). Check our web site or Facebook page for possible changes or additions to the program.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 7th at 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

Please consider joining PHDC for 2014
Even though 2013 was an off-year for elections, PHDC's programs were engagingly relevant, with citizens and experts discussing & debating gun violence, City College, water issues, the Affordable Care Act, the Warriors' waterfront developments, carbon tax, ethics reform at City Hall, the state of unions in SF, and of course the local election. We would be honored to welcome you as a member as we forge ahead into 2014.

PHDC membership runs for one calendar year. It's still a bargain at $25 per year for a regular voting membership (and only $10 more for each additional household member). Affiliate membership (non-voting - for those living outside the Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, or houseboats area) is just $20.  More info here. Thanks for considering us.
Updates: Saving CCSF, California DISCLOSE Act
SAVING CITY COLLEGE. Rafael Mandelman's comprehensive resolution in support (passed by PHDC in November and submitted to the mayor, who did not respond), was passed by the California Democratic Party at their E-board meeting in late November. A CCSF delegation went to Washington Dec 12-13 to testify before the US Dept of Ed about why the agency wanting to deny accreditation to CCSF should itself be shuttered for violating the law and its own policies. Read about the trip here. The suit filed by the City Attorney and the faculty union AFT Local 2121 for a preliminary injunction against the ACCJC's revocation of CCSF's accreditation was heard in SF Superior Court Dec. 26. Nothing was decided. The fight continues.

CA DISCLOSE Act logo CALIFORNIA DISCLOSE ACT - SB 52. The landmark bill, which, unlike any other disclosure mandate, would let voters know who is really paying for a political ad, on the ad itself, is authored by Senators Mark Leno and Jerry Hill. It passed the State Senate this year, and, as a two-year bill, it's coming up before the Assembly and must pass in 2014. The San Francisco working group of California Clean Money Campaign (sponsor of SB 52) resumes its third-Saturday meetings on January 18th, 1pm - 3pm at the Potrero Branch Library, 1616 - 20th St. For additional information, email sf-info@caclean.org.
December's meeting was a party

The Potrero Boosters having again graciously invited PHDC to co-sponsor their Holiday Party, the festivities were held this year at a new space, the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts. A lovely party, filled with neighbors enjoying great food, holiday cheer and the occasional word of wisdom from a politician. And, further spreading cheer, guests donated 77 pounds of food to the SF Food Bank. Well done!
